Clinton promises national campaign, seeks help from black clergy

After meeting with more than 50 ministers in Kansas City, most of them African-American, Sen. Hillary Clinton said today that "we could do a lot to solve many of our problems in our country if we actually listened to one another a little more closely."

The Democratic presidential frontrunner said she disagreed with some of the clergy on some topics, including such issues as abortion and gay rights.

But she said the meeting with ministers from around Missouri showed common concerns in education, incarceration and health care.

When it was over, the ministers said they were impressed.

"She's not going to carry this state without black clergy," said U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat who helped organize the session.

The meeting followed an early afternoon fundraising event that brought in at least $250,000 for Clinton, according to one campaign estimate. The event had been rescheduled four times since its original date in May.

The New York senator arrived about an hour behind schedule.

During a 20-minute news conference, Clinton addressed other issues:

* Health care: "I learned a lot from what we tried to do in '93 and '94. I'm very proud we tried ... There's a great consensus building in the country to try and make some sensible changes." * Torture: "I think the United States should be very clear in our policies that we do not condone or conduct torture."

Clinton also pledged to campaign in Missouri if she is nominated by the Democratic Party.

"I want to run a national campaign," she said.

seeks help from black clergy

It should read, 'seeks to bribe black clergy'... doesn't clinton just hire them at $200,000 a pop as 'consultants'?

“I think the United States should be very clear in our policies that we do not condone or conduct torture.”

The whole Clinton administration was torture for many individuals (put to death for their knowledge of the Clinton’s crimes) and for the public as a whole.

Clinton also pledged to campaign in Missouri if she is nominated by the Democratic Party.

Same thing she says everywhere she goes.

“I want to run a national campaign,” she said.

This will be the excuse she will use once nominated for why she isn’t ‘campaigning’ in all the cities and states she promised she would. “I can’t be limited to any one state. This is national.”
