Delegate Rules Give Thompson an Edge
Real Clear Politics ^ | October 05, 2007 | By Peter Brown

Thompson may enjoy an edge in any drawn-out delegate slugfest due to his Sun Belt roots and “red state” strength.

That’s because the way delegates are allocated to the Republican National Convention, which picks the White House nominee, gives disproportionate clout to states that President Bush carried in 2004 above what their population would otherwise dictate. .......

The Republicans have not nominated a Northeasterner for president since Thomas Dewey in 1948. Only two of the past 13 GOP presidential nominees since then — Gerald Ford in 1976 and Bob Dole in 1996 — have not been from the Sun Belt.

I believe that this year will be an unusual primary season. Romney looks like he’s going to start off strong in Iowa and New Hampshire. He’ll have a ton of money to promote his victories. Maybe he has some momentum and gums up the works, gets enough delegates to postpone a nominee until late spring.
Does anyone else think this is possible?

Is that ton of money coming from his personal loans to the campaign?...

It must be nice, sorta like Perot did.

Winning both Iowa and NH may be a little overrated. In 2000 Bush won Iowa and got waxed by McCain in NH and then recouped in Delaware. Forbes also folded his tent after Bush’s Delaware win. Winning the early states is good but a candidate from the South that is accepted can still do well come Feb. 5, I think. All said it is a different primary season this time around and should be interesting.

The Michigan primary is Jan 15th. Romney owns the Republican party leadership but not the primary voters.

Michigan Republican voters are blue collar gun owners, mostly pro life, and even the RATS here are anti queer marriage.

Romney and Rooty may split the country- clubber vote and Fred will sweep the gun voters.

I’m pretty sure the term “Reagan Democrats” started in Michigan and those same voters are still pro-life pro-gun and wont be voting for NE liberals.

I think this rule will have to be recinded to account for Thompson entering the race late, avoiding debates, having a “trophy wife”, wearing gucci shoes, being the oldest front runner, being poo-pooed by James Dobson, lymphoma remission, yada, yada, blah-blah...

Yeah, all that, and he has no fire in the belly, and he was a BIG time lobbyist, too! {wink-wink}

>>>Michigan Republican voters are blue collar gun owners<<<

Advantage: Thompson

>>> mostly pro life<<<

Advantage: Romney

>>>and even the RATS here are anti queer marriage.<<<

Advantage: Romney

Why would social conservatives vote for a man who opposes the Federal Marriage Amendment and criminalizing abortion? It makes no sense.

Because Fred’s record is clear and has never changed. Nobody will buy the liberal spin.

>>>Because Fred’s record is clear and has never changed.<<<

So I guess we can continue to expect him to uphold amnesties, vote against increasing fines on employers who hire illegals, and vote against creating a system whereby employers can verify the legality of their employees?

Great. Open Borders Frederick to the rescue. *rolls eyes*

And really, you don’t need liberal spin. Romney stands on principles that are more in-line with social conservatives. Frederick doesn’t even see church as important enough to spend his time attending on a Sunday morning. I hope he enjoys his snooze.
