Austin Scott out for today's game

By Kevin Horan

Collegian Staff Writer

Austin Scott, one of Penn State's senior running backs, will not dress for today's game against Iowa because of an unspecified violation of team rules, the team announced this afternoon.

Sports Information Director Jeff Nelson made the announcement shortly before the Nittany Lions' game against Iowa, but would not answer further questions about Scott's long-term status with the team. He deferred all questions to coach Joe Paterno, who is scheduled to speak at the conclusion of today's game.

Scott started the first four games of the 2007 season at running back, but, after several costly fumbles, he was pushed behind senior Rodney Kinlaw on the depth chart for last week's game at Illinois. Scott is currently second on the team in rushing yards, with 302, and has six rushing touchdowns.

There was an alleged sexual assault early Friday on campus and gossip is flying that Scott is linked to it. There is a suspect in this case, but the name has not been released.

Gossip is also flying that Scott was set up (think Duke lacrosse team).

Scott has been sidelined for the Iowa game for team violations which have not yet been disclosed.

OK, so here’s how this should be handled. (Learn from the way they do things at Duke.)

First, you put out a Wanted poster with all the team on it, and plaster that all over campus.

Next, you put pictures of the accused on the front page of the paper. (A Newsweek cover would be dandy, too.)

Then, you cancel the team’s season and fire the coach.

A year and a half from now, you can drop all the charges if the guy turns out to be innocent.

What’s wrong with Penn, don’t they know how this sort of thing is handled?

You forgot the part about the DA announcing he has rock solid DNA evidence, and then a year and a half later admits he withheld the fact the DNA proved the innocence, not the guilt of the players.

Austin Scott not playing, he’s with family

Penn State tailback Austin Scott, a Parkland High School graduate, is not playing in today’s game against Iowa because he is facing team disciplinary action, sources said.

Scott is not with his Nittany Lion teammates today and his locker has been cleared out, two Penn State University sources said.

The sources, who did not wish to be identified, said Scott is at home with his family.

Penn State University has not issued an official news release about Scott’s situation.

You know it sounds like this guy has a bad rep to begin with. Have you ever considered the possibility that he might have done something wrong?

Interesting to see if the faculty gets a letter up to condem him before any facts are released. Oh wait the guys at Duke were supposedly rich and whi.... well you get the idea.

You sure are quick to defend him and sling mud at others when he hasn’t even been charged with anything yet.

I'm not considering anything. Unlike others who jumped to conclusions about Duke, I think I'll wait and see what shakes out.

Other than fumbling the ball a lot which isn't an indication of character, please cite instances of Scott's bad rep.

I'm not slinging mud about anyone. I am just reporting what I read in several news reports and also comments I'm reading in several Penn State forums. I even referenced those comments as "gossip" because no one knows anything for sure yet other than Scott was suspended for the game and he has cleaned out his locker. Here's one of the forums. Go read for yourself:

In the link at post 5 there’s mention that he had problems in ‘05 in the off season. Is that wrong or inconsequential? I should have looked into that before I posted

YUP

Wonder if the PSU faculty will create a petition condemning these actions. Oh, wait, Scott is black — never mind.

He was late to practice a few times and had terrible grades, but has not had scrapes with the law. He attended a high school near where I live and I am familiar with his career throughout high school and college.

The paren in the headline slurs the Penn State faculty and administration, the local cops and prosecutors. (may be another Duke lacrosse situation).

The item to which you linked looked to be a discussion of the play by play of the game. Comments like ‘Amen brother’, ‘Atta Boy’ and ‘Throw deep’. Not exactly enlightening commentary.

My reference to the Duke lacrosse situation had to do with information I read in an online report (not this one) about the accuser (it was reported she said she was assaulted by a PSU offensive football player). It was rumored (I've been reading a lot of sources) that Scott broke curfew and came in drunk at 4 AM the same evening. People, not me, but other people are connecting the two events.

My reference to this had nothing to do with the response of the Penn State faculty, administration, local cops and prosecutors because as yet, there has been no response from any of those entities.

The gossip I read was that Scott was being "set up".

I don't have anything against PSU. One of my children went there and had a great experience and next to the U of DE (my alma mater), they're my favorite college.

The Duke accuser did her cause immeasurable damage, because now whenever something like this happens, people wonder.

Do you find it strange that this report lumps all this information under the heading “PSU’s Scott Has Locker Emptied”? What conclusion is the reader expected to draw?

Supposedly his locker’s been cleaned out. Not a good sign.

That he's not coming back.
