A few days before, a small group of students had stormed out of class to recite an alternative Pledge that had Marxist overtones.

This thread at Free Republic contains all of the links that I could find on the web describing the controversy, and stories were published all over the media about the students new pledge.

This video covers the whole rally. I took video of our group saying the Pledge and then interviewed everyone who attended to learn why they carved out a few minutes from their day to attend the rally. At the end of the video is a clip from the Denver Fox Television stations interview of Gerald Mangus who organized the rally.

I grew up in Denver and am so sad to see how liberal Boulder has become ~
and especially sad for the brainwashed kids who don’t realize how lucky they are.

Sigh ... I wish the seven could have been seven hundred strong. Alas, activism — even in the form of patriotic displays — seems to not be conservatives’ strong suit. Still, I salute those who did raise their voices. They’re the latest heralds along a centuries-old watchtower.

I dreamed about hundreds of patriots surrounding the school and yelling up at it with our flags, but it was not to be.

One of my daughters best friends attends Boulder High and we just happened to have her over for supper the night of the rally. I asked her a few pointed questions during dinner.

How many students participated in the real pledge?

She told me that last year they had the pledge at lunchtime outside, and only a couple of kids showed up because of scheduling conflicts. But with the change this year, they have someone read the pledge over the speaker system every morning at 8:30, some kids stand up in class, put their hands over their hearts and say the pledge.

I was pleased to hear that!

Then she said the nubers were about 1/3 who were patriotic, 1/3 who were for the new marxist pledge, and 1/3 who honestly don’t care about the whole debate.

As I was walking to my car after the rally I stopped a group of boys who were heading to school and asked them if they agreed with the student workers club in changing the pledge, and one boy said, “not really”.

My daughters friend also said that when the students stormed out of class a couple of weeks ago to say the “new pledge” a boy came running into class and yelled, “its freaking communism”.

The students contacted the local paper, The Daily Camera (Which we patriots laughingly call, The Daily Comrade), and they were oh so happy to have a video camera outside of the school waiting to document the event.

They did not bother to show up for our pro troop rally on September 9th before Gathering of Eagles III, nor did they show up for the Pro Pledge rally last thursday. Although they were sent press releases about both events.

Anyway, the point is that there are some students at Boulder high with enough patriotism and courage to stand every day while the real Pledge is being recited. That was good to learn.

Also, the student worker club is VERY small and only had a couple of students willing to walk out of class to say the new pledge.

Its just a fringe group of kids who are being hyped up by the media.

I really believe there are way more conservatives in Boulder than anyone gives us credit for.

This is just a small group of brainwashed kids who are trying to be cool. Hyped by the media as a “new movement”.

A nice antidote would be to send them on a field trip to Iran for a month.

Let them see how freedom lovin’ democracy determined students in Iran are being tortured and locked up.

For the girls especially, it would be a powerful exercise in the blessings of American Citizenship.

I cut the kids tons of slack, it is the adult teacher who is nurturing them along that I personally would like to see publicly flayed and perhaps held in a stockade in front of the school for a couple of months and forced to have read to him, out loud, every conservative book that has been written in the past hundred years to help “sensitivity train” him back to reality.

The original pledge of Allegiance was written by an avowed socialist ...just an fyi. He was intent on getting everyone onboard to support the State (just like in old Soviet Russia).

I stopped reciting the Pledge in Homeroom when I was in high school. Please calm down and read my explanation before you attack me.

I never objected to the content of the pledge. I was not protesting the United States or any US policies. My objection was to the rote habit of it, which I felt cheapened patriotism and did nothing to contribute to education. I felt strongly — and still feel — that a statement of patriotism that isn’t heartfelt and deliberate doesn’t mean anything.

Every morning for several years, I stood in a room full of kids who didn’t give much if any thought to the words. Words we learned in the second grade, broken into chunks that were easily memorized, with no explanation of what they meant.

I never stopped reciting the pledge at assemblies, or holiday events, or anywhere other than homeroom. And I didn’t walk out or remain seated; I stood, hand on my heart, with the rest of the class. I never got a lot of hassle, either — a few fellow students asked me about it, but my explanation seemed to either satisfy or confuse them, and they didn’t bring it up again. I don’t recall any teachers asking about it. If they did, it obviously wasn’t a big deal, because I don’t remember it.

If a school opts not to recite the pledge as a part of the school day that really doesn’t upset me. Students who want to gather before the bell rigs can do so. Fewer students will, but it will mean more.

Blaming the media is too easy. It wasn't the media that held the rally, and I suspect you weren't there hoping that no one would notice.
