Oh, our God and King, we abound in our love for You. Thank you for first loving us and demonstrating the depth of that love by giving your Son to be beaten, shamed and killed for us. Your love is so great that You wanted our sins blotted away so that You could fellowship with us. This is awesome in our sight and we, the redeemed, are a grateful people.

We are gathered together here in the name of Jesus to accept your invitation to fellowship with You and each other and to intercede on behalf of our President, our military and our nation.

We pray for President Bush this day and ask you to grant him wisdom in her fullness as You describe her in Proverbs 8. May he have prudence, knowledge, discretion, the fear of the Lord, counsel, understanding, power, riches and honor, righteousness, the ability to judge rightly, multiplication of his days, favor of the Lord and Your blessings. Give him time to seek her.

Cover our troops with Your favor and the protection of Your angels. Place a shield about them that no bullet can penetrate and send them Your word to bring them spiritual healing. We appreciate the gift of each one to us for our protection and acknowledge that they are from You.

Along with Abraham, we ask for Your undeserved favor and mercy for our country. He asked You, “Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?…That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” For the sake of the redeemed in this country who love and serve You, we ask for an outpouring of Your Spirit on our countrymen. Let the gospel come to them in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.

We believe we receive this prayer and those to be added this day answered by Your grace in accordance with Your Word and in Your goodness. Amen.

Why Do We Give?

READ: Matthew 6:1-4

When you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. —Matthew 6:3

Whatever happened to the notion of giving for the sake of giving?" asked Tim Harford, columnist for FinancialTimes. "The closer you look at charitable giving, the less charitable it appears to be." A study of door-to-door fund-raising campaigns, for instance, found that organizations earned far more by selling lottery tickets than by asking for donations.

"This hardly suggests a world populated by altruists seeking to do the maximum good with their charitable cash," says Harford. At least for some people, there’s a something-for-me/something-for-you approach to giving.

Jesus also dealt with the issue of motives in giving. When He said not to let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, He was teaching that our motives for giving to God and to others must be pure. Our giving should be in response to God’s love. To encourage pure motives, Jesus instructs people to give and to do good deeds in secret with no thought of themselves. God, who sees everything, will reward them (Matt. 6:3-4).

Our generosity should be God-centered—not to make us look good, but to please the Lord. With your next good deed, ask yourself: If I knew that no one would ever find out that I did this, would I still do it

Grant us, then, the grace for giving
With a spirit large and free,
That our life and all our living
We may consecrate to Thee.  —Murray

God sees the giver as well as the gift; the heart as well as the hand.

Dear Lord, let Your Glory abound this day and hereafter. Shine Your Light for all to see. Let the heathens, atheists and all that disavow You, tremble in Your Presence.

We await Your Coming and watch for You constantly. Keep us aware, that we may be ready, to rise up, to conquer, to prevail over darkness.

Keep Your Battalions alert and safe from all intrusion. Let us sense the evil lurking in the shadows, always.

Let our hearts join together in a bond of steel, impenetrable, unbending, a solid force for You to lead.

In Your Heavenly Name, we pray.

Amen.

Holy Lord,

When we pause to consider Your invitation to pray, we are overcome with a sense of awe and wonder; that You, the Creator of the Universe, would extend to us the offer to communicate and fellowship with You at any time, in any place, and for any reason. Awesome and Mighty God, we thank You for such an opportunity----one that holds unceasing possibilities for goodness; for that which Your mighty hand touches cannot fail. Place in our hearts Your prayers, Father, that we may pray for that which pleases You. May each prayer rise as incense before Your Heavenly Throne, that You alone may be glorified. In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Most Merciful Father, that we were more like thee, for therein lies revival of heart and home and country.

OH! TO BE LIKE THEE
Thomas O. Chisholm

Oh! to be like Thee, blessed Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

Refrain:

Oh! to be like Thee, oh! to be like Thee,
Blessed Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.

Oh! to be like Thee, full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wand’ring sinner to find.

Oh! to be like Thee, lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer, others to save.

Oh! to be like Thee, Lord, I am coming,
Now to receive th’ anointing divine;
All that I am and have I am bringing,
Lord, from this moment all shall be Thine.

Oh! to be like Thee, while I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love,
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and Heaven above.

Amen, Lord. Give us a spirit of unity and encourage us to lift one another up, fill in for each other's weaknesses as they fill in for ours and lead us to stand strong by faith in Jesus.
