Schumer pushes for more water, sewer plant funding

Newburgh -- US Senator Charles Schumer this morning urged the federal government to be more proactive in repairing and restructuring the nation’s aging sewage and water treatment infrastructure, and noted that the health of the public and overall economic growth of the nation could be at stake.

Speaking at the City of Newburgh’s sewer plant Monday morning, Schumer noted that nearly $20 million goes into state sewage and water treatment infrastructure every year, and that the local taxpayers should not have to bear that burden.

He noted that until the 1970s, the federal government sponsored programs that awarded grants and low-interest loans to municipalities and states to aid in water and sewage infrastructure costs.

Schumer announced legislation that he said would bring back similar programs. He introduced the Water Quality Improvement Act, which would bring $7 million a year in grants to municipalities, and the Water Quality Finance Act, which would bring $14 million in low interest loans per year also for municipalities.

Orange County Executive Edward Diana conveyed the county’s needs for water and sewage improvements to the senator; he told Schumer there is no way the county can do it on their own.

If the people who live in the states need this and can’t afford it, then who does Schumer expect to get the money from - is there some kind of secret group of “federal” citizens that are not the same as the state’s citizens?

Pushing government expenditures up to higher levels is a political con game.

All economies and all money are local - state and federal economies are no more than statistics that sum up all the local economies in their area. There is no secret pot of state or federal gold, there is only local taxpayers and from their pockets which group of politicians take their money makes no difference, the affect on their pocket book is the same.

The lower level politicians do not want to ask the people who elected them to agree to a tax increase for their latest new program. So, they ask the politicians at the next higher level to allocate the funds using their level of authority. Where do the funds for the higher level come from? The same place as do all funds, the local taxpayer.

But, the con game is that the lower-level politicians get to campaign next time with the notice that they “kept the taxes down” while the higher level politicians get to campaign with the notice that they brought the poor taxpayers some magic money from the “separate” money available through them.

Meanwhile, the most ill-informed taxpayers, who happily applauded their thieving politicians, are still scratching their heads because their total taxes are never reduced, only increased, in spite of all the politicians promises.

Clueless guy doesn't get that we pay for it one way or another.

I think he gets it. Supposedly, according to the NY Times' story I read some years back, he got 1600 on the SAT way back when. That's a perfect score. He thinks we're that dumb, IMHO. That's why they brag about bringing home assorted pork from D.C., whether it is something absurd and bizarre or infrastructure maintenance.

Some of *us* are that dumb; present company excluded.

Too many people seem to think government handouts are freebies. You are probably right about him getting it.
