Regular swearing at work can help boost team spirit among staff, allowing them to express better their feelings as well as develop social relationships, according to a study by researchers.

Yehuda Baruch, a professor of management at the University of East Anglia, and graduate Stuart Jenkins studied the use of profanity in the workplace and assessed its implications for managers.

They assessed that swearing would become more common as traditional taboos are broken down, but the key appeared to be knowing when such language was appropriate and when to turn to blind eye.

The pair said swearing in front of senior staff or customers should be seriously discouraged or banned, but in other circumstances it helped foster solidarity among employees and express frustration, stress or other feelings.

I really wasn’t talking so much about the swearing. I hear people that use the f word in front of every noun and it’s just...boring but if employees are being berated in the process...that is insulting IMO.

“Everyone feels better when you call an A$$hole and A$$hole..”

True, I wish I could do that at work some times.

While I've let go a few choice words at work now and then, I don't find it particulary enjoyable or productive.

Of course, there would be less of an incentive to swear if that fat@ss b*tch across the office from me would just do her @&$# job and ease up on the p*ssing and moaning everytime she was forced to do actual work.

Lazy, good-for-nothing @*&#&$##*!!

Most of my painters were ex cons working out of halfway houses so it wasn’t easy to insult them. When I paged them I would use their prison number by calling for inmate number xxxxxxxxxxxx.

On the other hand I had a retarded girl and an elderly retiree prepping parts for me. I was always gentle with them and made it clear that all the painters were to respect them as well.

So it’s fine to swear at work? I’m sure employees will keep this little relaxing of standards in control like they did the casual Friday dress thing, right?

Sometimes our rules seem ridiculous but they are often a reflection of the knowledge of human nature that many people seem to have a need to go beyond the limits whether it’s speed limits, dress, language, whatever. Swearing happens at work and sometimes it is certainly merited but something like this will open the floodgates to foul language and forget the little pantywaists who find it objectionable. And when workers start swearing at the client, let’s realize that we started it with permissive standards. Finally, making workplace swearing acceptable behavior actually removes the intended shock value of workplace swearing in the first place and forces the manager to rise to higher levels of profanity to continue the shock effect.

Glad I’m an independent contractor. I don’t have to put up with language if I don’t want to do so.

Ah, but like any other form of discourse cussing needs to be properly employed in order to achieve its full artistic effect. Simple potty-mouthing every other word is crude, adolescent, and worse, ineffective. Cussing should be used like an expensive spice - just so much; more ruins the effect. I have a particular individual in mind when I think of high masters of the art, a Drill Instructor I knew back in the day when this particular means of expression was still allowed, in fact, was still considered a necessary professional qualification taking years of practice and honed by the critical faculties of one's equally fluent peers.

It should not descend to brutal crudity. Well done it contains all the elements of poetry: cadence, scansion, alliteration and assonance, and an appreciation for pungency and brevity. Calling a spade a "f***ing shovel" is the mark of the tyro, the amateur, the dilettante. Terming it a "sh*t-covered idiot stick" carries with it a certain artistic complexity more typical of a fine wine. "Ah, yes, I'm picking up a touch of blackberries and bell peppers on that rant. Nice finish."

It is, sadly, somewhat of a lost art or rather a suppressed one. It behooves those of us who truly appreciate it to keep it alive in the darkness, hoping with all our hearts for a new dawn of aesthetic appreciation. No sh*t.

I work with a bunch of dudes. All in their 30’s. Your bound to hear the occassional “WTF?” or “You gotta be !#$@# kidding me!” from time to time.

If you work with passionate people (and that’s what you want to hire people that are passionate about the job that they do) then occassionally their feelings get the best of them.

People who use profanity are a scourge on society, they represent a breakdown of the moral fiber of society. There are places where it may be acceptable. But most places it is not, most places. It angers me to no end, that I can’t go out in public with my children without having some dumb monkey cursing up a storm.
