More woe for GMTV's Kate Garraway as parking officials crush her car
Daily Mail ^ | October 18, 2007

GMTV presenter Kate Garraway was left devastated after parking officials crushed her VW Beetle car - because the tax disc was out of date, it was revealed.

The 39-year-old Strictly Come Dancing star, had been unable to drive after getting tendonitis as a result of her strenuous rehearsals.

She had left it round the corner from her North London home while she got lifts from friends, but apparently Kate did not realise was the tax was overdue.

When the untaxed vehicle was spotted by a warden, in accordance with DVLA procedure it was it clamped. And because it was not taxed 24 hours after that, it was taken to a car pound.

Kate failed to collect it, and a week later it was crushed.

A friend of the GMTV star told The Sun: "Kate has been in agony with tendonitis and was banned from driving by her doctor.

"She couldn't even walk, let alone drive.

"She didn't even know it had been taken until a few days ago and really thought it was still at the pound.

"Kate is gutted, she really loved that car, it must be worth about £10,000 and there were personal items in it.

Why couldn't they sell the car and give her the proceeds after deducting a fine? Is it fair to destroy a car because someone is late in paying a tax? Are the British really such a bunch of sheep to tolerate this? If someone fails to pay his property tax in the UK, do they burn down the house? That would make as much sense.

I know that when government becomes too powerful, it will treat citizens with contempt. But I am still astonished.

You have 30 minutes to move your car.
You have 10 minutes.
Your car has impounded.
You car has been crushed into a cube.
You have 30 minutes to move your cube.

This is the govt that takes aerial shots of your house to see if you have any illegal TV receiving equiment you haven’t declared and payed the tax on. Seems like Brits might need their own version of a tea party.

“Why couldn’t they sell the car and give her the proceeds after deducting a fine?”

Yeah, it seems to me that this would have made more sense.

I suppose they were simply sending a message.

Boy, governments sure do act cocky against a citizenry that they know is too chicken to fight back.

In Britain you may not own a gun. You may not carry a knife. You will soon not be able to own or possess a pointy object. You will do what the government says. You will not be able to defend yourself. Your teeth will fall out because you cannot get to a dentist this year.

England. An empire on the skids.

"She didn't even know it had been taken until a few days ago and really thought it was still at the pound.

So she knew it had been impounded, but let things go assuming the car would still be there. It's strange they crushed the car, instead of putting it up for auction. Apparently she was not given a final notice that she had to pay or her car would be crushed. Something is not adding up.

The comments on the original article mentions that there are postal strikes going on.

Talk about 'takings!' I know this is England, not the USA but to paraphrase the old 'Brain on Drugs' spots:

This is your government.

This is your government on KELO.

Taxation is a form of theft. The precise technical term is extortion. A government is a criminal organization that extorts money from its victims, primarily using the threat of punishment for non-payment. The fear of what would happen in the absence of the government is the other angle of the protection racket.

But that doesn't mean that government should not exist, or that it should not collect taxes. It means that goverment must collect taxes sparingly, and only for the most critical and essential services (e.g., military, police, courts, and not much else.) The goal should be to operate a government with as small a tax burden as possible. It should certainly not be to tax the last dime the taxpayer (or the economy) can possibly spare (which is what most governments actually do.)

Guess so. One outrage after another like this. Time for afternoon tea.

Thanks, I had to read into the comments section to find this:

"Perhaps she would have got her notices from the DVLA if they weren't stuck in a warehouse somewhere because of the postal strikes!"

Dear Brits -

How could you have fallen so far from your ‘finest hour’?

May all good, patriotic Brits come to Texas, but keep the socialists penned up on the island there.

Seriously, your empire has gone to h*ll for no great reason.

The Barons had it easy in 1215: just get old King John to sign the Magna Carta. Rights restored!

What can citizens do when you have an army of faceless, soulless bureaucrats who are taking away all your rights for some lofty-sounding b.s.?

“It’s for the children, you know....”

“Regulations clearly state....”

Freedom dies; not with a bang, but a whimper.

Stories like this make me thankful for what little remains of the Fourth Amendment.
