Democrat loses funding for supporting Republican

WATERLOO - Democratic Town Board candidate Thomas Finnerty has a campaign sign in his yard for a Republican incumbent running on an independent line, prompting party leaders to pull his funding.

Although the Democrats don't have a candidate in the race, Seneca County Democratic Party chairman Theodore Young thinks the sign for Town Supervisor James Mooney shows disloyalty and that Finnerty therefore should not receive the $200 allotted to Town Board candidates.

The dispute stems from the race between Mooney and challenger Sharon Secor, the current Seneca County manager.

Finnerty also cited Young's comment in an Oct. 5 Finger Lakes Times article that voters might want to consider those running on the Open Government Party line in races without a Democratic candidate.

Secor is running on the Republican and Open Government party lines. Mooney, who lost a GOP primary to Secor, is on the Conservative and Independence Party lines.

“It seems rather hypocritical to me for the Democratic chairman to be endorsing the Republican candidate on the Open Government line, but he doesn't want me to have a Mooney sign in my yard,'' Finnerty wrote.

He also accused Young of being opposed to giving Democratic Party funds to its candidate for sheriff, Jack Stenberg, who won the party primary.

In response, Young accused Finnerty of “half-truths and false accusations.''

He said the Democratic Committee works hard raising money for candidates “the old fashioned way.''

“Our committee is hard-working and loyal, and we expect the same in our candidates,” he said. “Simply because you are a registered Democrat, doesn't mean that you are a Democrat at heart.”

He said he called Finnerty about his Mooney sign after receiving numerous phone calls from committee members.'

“This is America and Mr. Finnerty may have anyone's sign he chooses,” Young said. “However, we consider that disloyal to the party and therefore will not help fund his campaign.”

Same thing happened to St. Paul mayor Randy Kelly, an all-around decent guy from the now defunct Pro-Life, Pro-Second Amendment wing of the DhimmiCrap party. He endorsed Bush and the leftards declared jihad on him.

“Simply because you are a registered Democrat, doesn't mean that you are a Democrat at heart.”

Sounds like a shot across the bow. Mr. Finnerty had better start finding a new job during this term as he's likely to find stiff competition at his next election from a real democrat.
