Potential Lessons of the California Fires & Other Constructive Commentary
Quix | 22 OCT 2007 | Quix

The fires in CA are horrendous by any measure.

Personally, I believe they are an event full of import for FREEPERS, CONSERVATIVES and AUTHENTIC CHRISTIANS in California and across the Nation.

Whether it is fires; hurricanes; Jihadi attacks; bird flu; meteors; crash-of-the-dollar; pine beetle; quakes; volcanos; swarms of tornados tsunamis . . . NWO or whatever . . . there appears to be plenty on our plate in this era.

We have had tastes with 9/11 and Katrina . . . some tornado swarms . . . these fires . . . tastes of how massively devastating disasters natural, 'happenstance' or planned can be.

As usual, in the situation with these fires, FREEPERS are stepping up to the plate and serving to inform, warn, alert, notify untold numbers of people who would not have been so informed otherwise or who would have been informed more poorly or significantly later.

I believe this is just a hint of the stature FREEPERS are capable of.

I believe that with a minimum of thoughtfulness and brain-storming . . . FREEPERS could articulate some lessons and potential lessons that FREEPER activism in the situation demonstrates.

I don't have any particular script . . . I would just like to see us actively anticipate potential diasterous situations and have some minimal structure, plan, approach at least DISCUSSED SOMEWHAT, if not planned in the most basic terms . . .

Sadly, too often, we neglect such potentials. We don't bother until we are facing the . . . fires . . . personally.

imho, That's not wisdom.

We are wiser than that . . . IF . . . we WILL ACT like it.

BASICALLY, FREEPERS are likely to be a huge percentage of the back bone of CAN-DO folks in any crisis. WE COULD BE MORE EFFECTIVE with less of a 'getting up to speed' penalty with some collaborative forethought.

Any takers?

I think that unthinking people make flippant, backhanded comments about entire counties/states, in the vein of “let all those commie malibu libs burn!!”, which can really be shameful in retrospect. We saw a lot of that while these fires were developing, and now they seem COMPLETELY uncalled-for. Disasters of this caliber may make an exciting news day, but at the end NOBODY benefits. For heaven sakes people, open your hearts!

Right. They show up uninvited.

I strongly agree.

And am trying to curtail my sometimes over quick flip-ness.

Our beautiful state is subject to these wildfires each fall. May God protect all in the path of danger. I dreamt that a fire came near my mountain home last night; I was never so glad to wake up and find my family and photographs all safe.

My prayers are with our neighbors out on the coast; may God’s hand be upon them and may He keep them safe.

If I may take this opportunity to send kudos to NautiNurse for her informative Hurricane Threads! They are my 'go to' for info before, during and after hurricanes. The exchange of info is priceless.... from current radars to what to pack when evacuating to what's happening 600 miles away where my sister lives.

Evacuating is a scary thing, which becomes less scary the more information you have at hand.

I know this isn't fire related, but I hope it's not considered off the wall either! Just wanted to give kudos!

I started planning, many, many years ago, while living in SoCal.

After watching people vacate on Friday nights and return on Sunday nights, and the traffic it created even then, I decided I was not where I wanted to spend the rest of my life.

Crowding people together causes a stressful situation. IMHO, it’s like jamming rats in a cage.

Overcrowding, traffic, time constraints and just everyday problems multiply. Everyone is in a hurry, running over each other.

When there are times of crises, like now, do we help each other? Too many are tied up just keeping on track to reach out and help others. Then, we don’t know how to help, if possible.

No, not everyone acts just for themselves. But, we need more small groups, neighbors, to start helping each other on a day to day basis. Then we will know how to better help each other in emergencies.

Me, I like small towns. The smaller the better. People relying on each other every day. Knowing each others needs, and helping where we can.

I really don’t know how L.A. would react to a real crisis, except chaos and hysteria. Chaos and hysteria are also my description of Hell.

My heart goes out to all of our CA residents in the path of these terrible fires.

Stay alert and be safe.

I would say that the “charity begins at home” moral applies here as well. If you’re in a disaster situation, your absolute number one priority is to secure yourself and your immediate family. Otherwise, you may become the problem, spreading resources that much thinner. Self-sufficiency is the most important quality to have during a disaster.

Of course, there are many legitimate reasons that you aren’t able to, which is why we have disaster management teams, FEMA, evacuation shelters, etc. That’s where FReepers and other civic-minded citizens pitch in to help those who can’t help themselves.

But first and foremost: be prepared to take care of yourself!

Appreciate your kind comments.

I’m far from perfect, spiritually or otherwise.

I do try to face myself and to grow, by God’s Grace and my friend’s support and help.

I think the maps thing is a very good issue.

I wonder . . . seems to me that it would be wise to have FREEPERS particularly those gifted with maps and their manipulations . . .

to have at least 2-3 FREEPERS in each region with the maps as digitally stored as well as links for finding updated and modified ones—in ready files on FLASH drives etc.

Any volunteers?

WOW.

and to know . . . there are millions of air-headed environmentalists who would not have a clue what the message of that pic is.

I believe that authentic Christians, conservatives and FREEPERS should be THE BEST STEWARDS of the earth. But not mindlessly so. And not prefering snail darters over people.

Yes. I loved living the 10 years in San Diego. Loved it.

Still miss the place.

But I realized then that too many others felt that way. And even then I saw that the border was a joke, in many respects . . . 1970’s.

But there are beloved wonderful people there and we need to help them plan and learn to support one another

AHEAD OF the next crisis.
