Homeland Security: New York's Monroe County votes to defy Gov. Eliot Spitzer's order making it easier for illegal aliens to get driver's licenses. They understand it makes it easier for terrorists too.
Speaking last Friday at NYU's ironically named Center for Law and Security, Spitzer tried to defend his recent order undercutting federal law and revoking a post-9/11 executive order by his predecessor requiring valid Social Security numbers to get a license. Under Spitzer's new rule, set to take effect in December, foreign passports and foreign birth certificates will be good enough.
To say it has met with opposition in a state that was Ground Zero for Mohammed Atta and his friends would be an understatement. A scant 22% of New Yorkers approve of the plan, according to a recent poll, and on Oct. 10 the Monroe County legislature voted 20-9 to order Clerk Cheryl Dinolfo to continue requiring Social Security identification.
Former Navy Secretary John Lehman, who served on the 9/11 Commission, said Spitzer's decree was "absurd."
"It's a perfect formula for al-Qaida. They won't be able to resists it. They will be able to come to New York," he said. "It's going to become a magnet to lawbreakers because the surrounding states will adhere to the federal standards."
