Damned If You Do: Bush Visit Will 'Distract' From CA Firefighting
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 10/23/2007 4:01:54 PM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

President Bush has shown that he can be empathetic, sensitive and decisive. But those qualities eluded him for days after Hurricane Katrina . . . He didn't cancel his vacation until two days after Katrina struck and didn't visit the region until four days after the storm. -- "A compassionate Bush was absent right after Katrina", USA Today, 9-9-05

USA Today's broadside is typical of the MSM criticism leveled at Pres. Bush for his failure to visit New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. So, now that President Bush has announced that he will be visiting California on Thursday while the wildfire flames are still burning, naturally the MSM and Dems will put politics aside and laud his decision, right?

I did say "the MSM and Dems."

LOL Sorry. Had to laugh at the video. One long political exchange is what I observed.

Amazing. These democrats NEVER turn it (Repub bashing) off, esp. out here in CA, where I live.

Instead of THANKING him for taking time out to VISIT this socialist hole of a State, they BASH him.

Not real bright considering he controls $2.5 trillion in federal dollars. Big dummies...

I had no opinion on John Garamendi until I saw this video. I do now.

John Garamendi is scum.

Political grandstanding while people’s homes are burning is contemptible behavior even for bottom feeders like Dems.

There is NO comparison between the fires and Katrina. NONE.

I want to know WHO INTERRUPTED THE LT GOV at 37 seconds into the video. He goes from blaming Bush for the fires to,
“Ok, President Bush comes out, we’ll be polite, but frankly, heavy sigh... thats not the solution. How about sending our National Guard back from Iraq, so we have those people available here to help us?”

I wondered about that too. Was it an aide, off camera, gesturing frantically, or did some inner gyroscope tell him that he had taken his ungraciousness too far, even for a Dem?

An irony of this is that a decade or more ago, a California airship company almost produced an airship specifically designed for fire fighting.

The idea was that an airship can carry a lot more water than a plane or helicopter, and doesn’t have to drop it all at once. Instead it can “rain” on a fire, or to moisten an area threatened by the fire, to slow its spread.

An airship can also land directly on a body of water like a lake or even on a open large water tank to refill itself, which happens as quickly as its tank can flood. The great difference in loaded and unloaded weight is made up by gas compressors on board.

One possibility this company didn’t consider was of adding high expansion fire fighting foam to its water. This would result in copious amounts of foam being ejected from the airship like a giant shaving cream dispenser.

Unfortunately, the company went out of business before it could build its airship. Had they done so, it might have resulted in preventing many billion dollars of fire damage that afflicts the western United States every year.

Thats all after the fact. Many environmental laws in California CAUSE these fire to rage out of control. In many places you cannot clear the land around your house to a safe distance. The brush is tinder for your house.

Please people, look closely at some of the video of burned out homes and look at the surrounding trees and shrubs. Many are still green and standing. I saw a few videos of homes that were gone completely and the shrubs TOUCHING the house looked untouched. It was very odd.

According to Keith Olberman and his first (wild eyed) professor guest, the California fires are all Bush’s fault, and “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” really does apply, according to Olberman.

During the middle of the day, at the top of every hour, I recite over the ABC"News" opener:

"And now the latest on how George Bush sucks from ABCNews..."

Three out of four times the lead story is on how Bush and his administration suck du jour...

You can bet your Bippy that some Lib group would have objected to ‘foaming’ a fire from above......

Kinda ‘miss’ Falwell etal not being around to ‘blame’ the fires on God ‘punishing’ the sinners

I suppose that I could make various comparisons, but why don't you just let me in on your point.

Dignitaries and politicians get in the way, causing security issues, more road closers etc. It does absolutely no good to have him, or *any* of them parading around, giving speeches, posing for shots etc.

Yet another Major League Clymer.

What a Maroon!

Notice he didn't mention the 800 Marines from Camp Pendleton, that will be delegated to fire fighting. I'd like to know what fraction of the CA National Guards is deployed to Iraq. I'll bet it's not over 20%, leaving all the rest, and the California State Guard (a true state militia, unlike the National Guard, which are reserve components of the US Army and Air Force, paid for almost entirely by the federal government) to fight the fire along with any other federal military active and reserve forces that the President will make available. We've got several Marine Bases (29 Palms, Pendleton) Air Force Bases (Edwards, Vandenberg), Navy bases (primarily San Diego), and Army posts (Ft. Irwin,

If the fires spread to San Francisco, I'd not be sending any US military, active, reserve or Guard, to fight it there. After all, they aren't welcome there any other time, so why now?

Of course if the DemonRats, and RINOS, hadn't spent the last 30 or 40 years slashing the snot out the military's fraction of the GDP, we wouldn't need to send the CA NG, or any other, to kill terrorists around the world, we'd have the active duty forces to do the job.

In the second year of the Kennedy administration, and the first for which they'd have had full input into the budget, 1962, the military was given 9.3% of the GDP to do it's job, which did not include fighting any significant hot war. In FY 2006, with a couple of related hot wars, and several other "deployments" such as Djibouti, the Balkans, etc, they were given 3.1%, exactly 1/3 the fraction of the GDP. Meanwhile entitlements almost doubled their fraction from 6.1% to 11.9% during the same period. Source

Thank Heaven for Jim Robinson I Second that motion!

BTW, just where in CA are Jim and the FR servers located? Somewhere out in the desert would be a comforting answer.. but I fear they are on the wrong side of the fire line.
