Iran to Buy 24 Jet Fighters from China

October 24, 2007

Ha'aretz

Yossi Melman

Iran has signed a deal with China to buy two squadrons of J-10 fighter planes that are based on Israeli technology, the Russian news agency Novosti reported yesterday. The 24 aircraft are based on technology and components provided to China by Israel following the cancellation of the Lavi project in the mid-1980s. The engines of the J-10 are Russian-made.

The total cost of the planes is estimated at $1 billion, and deliveries are expected between 2008 and 2010.

The estimated operational range of the aircraft, with external fuel tanks, is 3,000 kilometers, which means Israel falls within their radius of operation.

During the 1980s, Israel Aircraft Industries, along with U.S. firms, developed a multi-role aircraft that was considered the most advanced of its type at the time.

Following the development of a prototype, the Reagan administration stopped funding, bringing about the cancellation of the joint project.

Israel then began selling some of the systems it had developed to various countries, including China.

"Iran to Buy 24 Jet Fighters from China"

Hopefully they'll end up being recalled because of faulty parts.

So now how should Israel react to this (i.e Iran using Israeli designed weapon on Israel itself)?

Assuming Iran still exists.

I think the key point of the article is that Reagan stopped funding...

Probably another of the many wise decisions of Ronald Reagan.

I guess some F117s, F22s and F35s might use these as target practice one day...

The Lavi is the basis for the new Chinese jet.

Doesn't look so very much like it. Except the basic shape.

J-10

Lavi

Engine inlet different, vertical stabilizer different. Nose shape appears a little different too.

Shares basic design with Saab Grippen and French Rafale also except that they have twin engiens and somewhat different intacks because of it.

You mean that the J-10 is based on the Lavi. A lot of technology went to China via Israel. Here is a J-10 carrying copies of Israeli Python air-air missiles. The technology shared enabled China to produce copies of the missile.

It’s yet another dodgy news story. How many of these types of news stories have emerged and bore no fruition. Pakistan will be the first export customer for the J-10.

China denies reports it will sell fighter jets to Iran
The Associated Press Published: October 25, 2007

BEIJING: China denied Thursday published reports it had agreed to sell its homegrown fighter jets to Iran, saying no talks had taken place.

Reports in Russian and Israeli media said Iran had signed a deal with China to purchase two dozen of its home-designed fighter jets known as the J-10, which could signal greater military cooperation between the countries at a time of continued tension between Iran and the West over its nuclear program.

“It’s not true, it is an irresponsible report,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told reporters. “China has not had talks with Iran on J-10 jets.”

Chinese state media revealed at the end of last year that the Chinese air force was equipped with a new generation of the J-10 fighter plane.

Ties between China and Iran are largely absent of the tensions between that country and the West, and it remains an important oil supplier to feed China’s growing economy.

The J-10 has been in development since the late 1980s, according to Global Security, and has utilized Russian technology.

The Russian news reports said the planes would be delivered starting next year, and the contract could be worth US$1 billion (€700 million).

“China denies reports it will sell fighter jets to Iran”

May be true, maybe not. Who knows? I don’t expect the truth to necessarily come out of China. Do you?

A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry just denied the report in a weekly news conference.

He said there has been no discussion between Iran and China regarding J-10 purchases.

Iran to Buy 24 Jet Fighters from China..

...that was built with the U.S. technology that the Clintons sold to them, no doubt.

Another Clinton scandal, perhaps?

It is a case of journalists getting it wrong yet again.

The sale of J-10s from China to Iran would have to appear on the U.N. arms register. China would have to declare the sale and the numbers sold.
