An InsiderAdvantage / Majority Opinion survey conducted Oct. 24-25 of 400 registered voters in Georgia indicates that a rematch of U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss versus former Sen. Max Cleland, who lost to Chambliss in 2002, might be the Democratic Partys strongest hope for reclaiming the Senate seat.
The poll asked voters which candidate they favored if given a choice between Chambliss and Cleland.
The results:
Chambliss - 36 percent Cleland - 24 percent Undecided - 40 percent
The survey showed some interesting numbers, said InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery, noting that while white voters were decided at a rate of nearly 71 percent, African-American voters were undecided at a rate of 73 percent. Similarly, he said, 73 percent of all Republicans were decided, with Chambliss receiving almost all of that vote, while 47 percent of Democrats remained undecided.
The key to this survey versus other surveys that have been conducted with other potential U.S. Senate candidates is that when you add Cleland to the mix, the undecided vote soars, leaving Chambliss well below the 50 percent mark, he said. My guess is that a well-funded Cleland campaign would still be an underdog, but would have more than a legitimate chance of potentially pulling off an upset, given the fact that among independent voters, Chambliss led by only 7 points with some 38 percent stating that they were undecided.
The margin of error was plus or minus 5 percent and the poll was weighted for age, gender, race and political affiliation.

Given how bitter Max Cleland remains over some of Chambliss’s ads from 2002, this could happen if Cleland is convinced that he could win.
Strongest hope? How about ‘Only’ hope. And that isn’t much of a hope. Just shows you that the Dems are in as bad a shape in GA as the GOP is in CA or NY.
That is true, and I wish I knew more about this polling firm.
Chambliss will ride to victory denouncing amnesty and advocating a border fence. Cleland will look like an imposter and hypocrite if he talks tough on illegal immigration.
“Chambliss will ride to victory denouncing amnesty and advocating a border fence.”
Sounds great, but Chambliss initially supported amnesty for illegals in the Senate before backing down. He’d also look hypocritical.
I know he is a late convert but at least he voted the right way (despite the ag and construction pressure). GA passed a series of tough laws against hiring illegals this past summer. It’s a potent issue in GA.
* 2002 Race for U.S. Senate
o Saxby Chambliss (R), 53%
o Max Cleland (D) (inc.), 46%
* 1996 Race for U.S. Senate
o Max Cleland (D), 49%
o Guy Millner (R), 48%
You’re probably right. Still, with so many poliitcal fires to put out, we don’t need another one.
Better watch, old max will get mad and blow himself up again.
As pissed as I was at Chambliss(I called everyday and wore them out)I hate the socialist even more.That would be a lost cause BTW anybody see where that pin landed?
Chambless will whip him again if he runs.
Max Cleland can run as the Black Knight.
(Sorry, flameproof suit donned. I’m a Vietnam vet, does that help?)
Yes, he did barely win...but not on Clinton's coat tails, as Dole carried Georgia.
Silly, just silly. The Ga. GOP will bring out pictures of him with mother sheehan and frenchie and every other piece of shiite the Democrats have and he will get blown away.
Please I don’t want to watch another Cleland race. But he would get crushed anyway.
