HUMAN EVENTS’ presidential preference poll of American conservatives found that former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson leads the competition for conservative support with 23% of the participants selecting him over the other candidates. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee tied for second with 19%, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney came in third at 13% and Arizona Sen. John McCain -- in what is probably a direct result of his stance on amnesty for illegal aliens -- came in dead last at 2.1%.

Can Rudy keep that many Conservatives? I think more Conservatives should take a close look at Huckabee...he's not Conservative on immigration and entitlements, imho.

Gotta wonder how conservative the Human Events readers are. Huckster and Rudy both with 19%?

I think I MIGHT prefer Romney to Huckabee but I really haven’t heard enough yet. Thompson for sure and Huckabee or Romney as VP.

I like what Romney says, but I wonder what he will do. I also wonder if he can carry any Southern swing states...Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana, maybe Tennessee.

The real key for Republicans is: Who can do well in Missouri, Ohio, Florida, Colorado, Iowa, Virginia and New Mexico?

I’ve been touting a Thompson/Watts ticket for months. The media is bashing Fred a lot, so the Dems must be afraid of him.

They’re saving any big dirt they have on Giuliani till after he secures the nomination, if he does.

You never know any of them will do until they get into office. They’re politicians, after all.

Most important thing is to WIN this thing. The alternative is scary.

Conservatives should take a good look at Hunter.

He not only says what we want to hear, He does it!!!!!

Conservatives should know, actions speak louder than words.

any conservative poll that has Huckabee and Romney as serious contenders is not credible.

The only true conservative on that pie chart is Duncan Hunter. The others are all phoneys, esp. Myth and Roodie.

Human Events readers tend to know and care about the issues. At least Hunter made it on to their pie chart, he isn’t there on Rasmussen. These people are conservatives and libertarians, and have been on the cutting edge of many issues for a good many years.

I’ve always liked Human Events but I am shocked to see this chart!

Why in the world would conservatives have anything to do with Guiliani? Someone sent me an e-mail link to a YouTube video entitled “Rudy Guiliani - Urban Legend” which was made by the firefighters from NYC. The firefighters hate him with a passion because, after gold was discovered in the basement of the tower and removed, Guiliani would not let them recover the bodies of some 121 firefighters and other civilians. The remains of the firefighters and civilians remain in the dump heap. Contrary to what Guiliani said at the 9/11 Commission hearing, the firefighters did not “take a stand” after they were given the order to evacuate, the radios Guiliani bought for them were defective and they couldn’t hear the order! The radios, by the way, were purchased without a bid proposal and were never field tested. (According to the firemen, the radios in the WTC bombing were defective and it took Guiliani 7 years to replace them with more defective radios.)

Tom Tancredo is promoted as the strongest presidential candidate against illegal immigration and has a place on his website (www.teamtancredo.com) that said (before the Congressional recess in July) that he HAD introduced legislation in Congress called the UNIQUE Act of 2007 which is the end-all, be-all anti-illegal legislation in the world. The only problem is that he STILL hasn’t introduced it after two months! Smoke and mirrors. When I first looked at his legislation at http://thomas.loc.gov in July, he only had 17 pieces of legislation. Four of them dealt with Taiwan, three with Sudan and the Sudanese, one with moving the American Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, one dealing with the importance of western civilization, etc, etc. As of yesterday, he had introduced three more pieces of legislation and one of them dealt, again, with Taiwan. When is he REALLY going to introduce, if ever, his UNIQUE Act? Seems to me he is just sucking money off the good-hearted patriots who are really against illegal immigration.

I don’t trust Tancredo. Remember, he is the dude who (along with David Drier, aka Liar Drier) gave us the Real ID Act. In addition, he voted for the USA Patriot Act (I and II), and the Military Commission Act. If the problem of illegal immigration were eliminated, Tancredo would be for a police state.

Now that Tancredo announced that he is not going to run again for Congress next year but will continue to run for President in 2008, does that mean that he will keep the money he took from patriots?

As far as Duncan Hunter is concerned, he hasn’t proposed that much legislation this session - about 10 pieces - none of which is startling. Is he so popular because he is California’s “favorite son?” If I remember correctly, it was Duncan Hunter who introduced the Military Commission Act. According to the Freedom Index (formerly the Conservative Index), which is based on the constitutionality of a congressman’s vote, Duncan Hunter scored a low 40%, the same as the four Democrat Congressmen in the districts surrounding him. (Tancredo is at or about 60%.)

I am still amazed at Human Events putting out such a poll! Has Human Events been infiltrated by the left and that is why the poll is so badly skewed?

Numbers are all over the board on every level. I believe we will just have to wait and see what happens in the next few weeks. The lower tier candidates half to drop out and throw their support behind the candidate who most closely mirrors their own views, and has a probability of winning and supporting Conservative values.

That is Fred and I would like to see unification of all Conservatives behind his candidacy.

“Of the 977 responses to that question, Illegal Immigration came in as the most important issue for conservatives...”

If true, doesn’t jive with the poll results. Clearly, the responders are either ignorant to their candidate’s position/record on illegal immigration or willing to sell out on the issue.
