Who will take on Hillary?

A year before polling day (and only two months before the first primary) the Republican nomination is wide open. Can Rudy Giuliani maintain his lead?

EIGHT months ago Charlie Cook, a tubby political analyst, said he was more likely to win the Tour de France than Rudy Giuliani was to win the Republican presidential nomination. Many pundits agreed. Sure, Mr Giuliani was a crime-busting mayor of New York and he famously kept his head when the twin towers fell. But he favours gun control, likes gays and does not want to ban abortion. Randall Terry, the founder of Operation Rescue, a radical anti-abortion group, calls him “Mayor Beelzebrooklyn”.

Yet Mr Giuliani is still the Republican front-runner. A poll of polls compiled by Realclearpolitics.com, a political website, puts him 11 percentage points ahead of his nearest challenger, Fred Thompson, an actor and former senator. The Intrade political futures market gives him a 41% chance of winning the nomination, while his nearest challenger by this measure, Mitt Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, has only a 29% chance. And a couple of recent polls showed Mr Giuliani narrowly pipping Hillary Clinton in a general election—the first time for a while that any Republican has done so. Mr Cook says he is thinking of working out and losing weight, just in case.

Mr Giuliani's supporters say he is such a fine leader that Republicans can overlook his messy private life (he is on his third marriage, and has strained relations with his children) and heretical views on abortion, gays and guns. Maybe they are right: many social conservatives also feel strongly about crime, taxes, and national security, Mr Giuliani's strengths.

Hillary's race against Republican Rick Lazio in the 2000 New York senatorial race meant something profoundly much more than a mere senatorial race.

First of all, it was a test of Hillary herself, Hillary as a political entity all to herself, politically separated from Bill, one that would live or die on what she was perceived to be from all the years in the DC spotlight, whether she was the political force many knew her to be, with the political cojones to earn the presidency on her own.

At the time I feared what her victory would mean. Not a means to an ends as Senator but as the very birth of, the very political validation of a frightening new force on the future political landscape of the US presidency..

If Hillary was beaten, and beaten soundly, she might have just slithered her way back to the ignominious ooze that spawned the greatest criminal couple since Bonnie and Clyde but that didn't come to pass. And now fast forward to the present as my worst nightmare is taking hold.

The prospect of Hillary as President, uninhibited, unsheathed, in all its all left-wing fury, the prospect of eight more years of Bill and Hillary, all the criminality, corruption. sleaze it implies frightens me to no end. Maybe what the left-wingers have been predicting about America's demise may turn out to be true with Hillary at the helm, Oh God ! please no.

Anyone who can read, take a few notes, remember a few details, and who has a basic understanding of human nature, has more than enough knowledge at hand, and skills to destroy Hillary. Cackles is a bomb with a fuse, and the people running against her keep hoping the media will set it off. Go after the kook. Do it in public, and be ready to restrain her.

I hadn't heard the label Beelzebrooklyn before. Not quite as catchy as Beelzebubba for Hillary's HINO. If Rudy wins the nomination (still unlikely), it would be Beelzebrooklyn vs. Beelzebubbette.

Scarier than Tweedledum vs. Tweedledee?

LOL...two New Yorkers with their rival gangs fighting behind them. Now where have we heard that theme before? Call in the Jets and Sharks, there's gonna be a rumble.

Why does the abortion issue keep being brought up as a measuring stick? Does anyone really believe a President will be elected who can get Roe v Wade reversed?
