For the first time in nearly 30 years, there is no breakaway front-runner for the Republican nomination as the first votes of Campaign 2008 loom, and a new Washington Post-ABC News poll underscores how open the GOP race remains.
Former New York City mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani maintains a double-digit lead over his main rivals, but most of his supporters back his candidacy only "somewhat," and he has yet to gain momentum among key primary voting groups or to distinguish himself as the best candidate for the party. Adding to the murkiness of the picture is that Republicans continue to be less satisfied with their candidate options than Democrats are with theirs.

In the new poll, a third of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said they would vote for Giuliani if their state's primary or caucus were held today. That puts him 14 percentage points ahead of Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) and 17 points ahead of former senator Fred D. Thompson (Tenn.).
Eleven percent said they would vote for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, and 9 percent support former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee...

I have to say that any poll that consistently puts John Mccain in the mid to high teens is suspect in the extreme.
One would suspect that the respondents were screened to include only working age men at home between the hours of 10AM to 2PM on weekdays.
Maybe they poll nursing homes.
But-——Huckabee is telling everyone he is in 2nd place now...
I’d say nervous hospitals. Nearly 20% for Crazy McNut ? Nope. He isn’t even on the political radar screen. Rudy is narrowly ahead or tied with Fred. I call shenanigans on this poll.

I don’t think so. He and Rootie have the highest name recognition of the Republican candidates. There are plenty of people who are Republicans and either don’t follow the election this far out. They support the name they know.
Triple E: Read a poll, especially a Rasmussen or Mason/Dixon sometime...

These polls aren’t objective as they are polling the same small percentage of registered, land-line Republicans who voted in 2004.
He won a lot of hearts and minds at his rally in Nashville, over 1,500 people attended. At the same time Fred! was giving a speech to a handful of supporters.
He's going to raise more money than Fred! this 4Q, if this money bomb pans out.

There’s no Soros or left-wing organizations supporting Paul. Just good, honest people from the heartland.
I think markets like Intrade are more indicative of strength in the campaign than any one poll. At Intrade, McCain trades at 7.0% which is behind Giuliani, Romney, Thompson and even Ron Paul. This is much more realistic than being second place in this one poll.
I went to abcnews.com and read the whole article. The whole article says how voters are SO discontented and how wonderful the Democrat candidates are and how weak the Republican candidates are. Now that I read entire the article I think the poll is a bunch of hooey too.
