Martin Resigns from Thompson Campaign
MSNBC ^

Posted on 11/05/2007 10:58:16 AM PST by jaybeegee

From NBC's Kelly O'Donnell and Mark Murray
A longtime friend and campaign fundraiser for Fred Thompson, Philip J. Martin, has resigned his role in Thompson's campaign.

The Washington Post reported over the weekend Martin had drug-related convictions dating back to the 1970s, and more recently Martin has had issues with the IRS including tax liens.

Martin had been providing use of his aircraft for Thompson to travel, and advisers tell NBC News that Thompson is not traveling on that aircraft today.

The campaign has issued this statement form Martin: "I have decided to resign my position as Chair of 'First Day Founders' of 'The Friends of Fred Thompson.' The focus of this campaign should be on Fred Thompson's positions on the issues and his outstanding leadership ability, not on mistakes I made some 24 years ago. I deeply regret any embarrassment this has caused."

----end excerpt----
I'm glad this is being resolved this quickly. The reports of Martin's decades-old convictions first surfaced Saturday night, and now by lunch on Monday the issue has been put to bed. I think the Thompson campaign comes out of this looking pretty good and Senator Thompson didn't (at least publicly) "throw his friend under the bus." If this is any indication of how scandal would be handled in a Fred Thompson administration, I may vote twice!

Well, that ends that, or are the DuncanDelusionists© going to try and make more hay out of it?

Thanks for posting this. I have been waiting to see how this would be handled. I think Martin’s resignation is for the best.

How much fun do you think rudy supporters are having right now? I hope that I’m wrong, but the liberals will most likely get what they want, two liberals running for president.

I think the Rudybots will take notice that Fred takes care of his problems when they show up. Rudy has more baggage than United Airlines hauls in one day. He CAN’T get away from it.

I’m waiting to see the same action taken by Sandy Berger of the Clinton campaign staff.

Hmmmm. Reminder to myself; don’t hold your breath.

Who on earth are the 30% of the gop that supports this guy? I like Rudy, he did a great job running the socialist utopia of New York City. And I’m voting for him if he’s the nominee. But how on earth does this guy get 30% of the gop base in the primary battle? I know we’re all split amonst a number of candidates, but based on the makeup of the party, I would think Hunter and Thompson would be the two candidates with the vote divided by the others. what the heck has happen to the party that Reagan and Goldwater built?

He did the right thing and Fred did the right thing by not throwing his friend under the bus like a real politician would have.

Name recognition. Unfortunately, people recognize Rudy from 9/11, but once his real stances, and his past show up, people leave. And quickly.

We haven't seen any of the attacks on him in the media, simply because the media want Rudy against hillary, it's a win-win for them, and they can bring all the skeletons out of the closet.

Fred is the most dangerous to Hillary winning, and I wonder where the Martin story came from, Rudy, Mitt or Hillary's camp.

Wow. That was fast. My first thoughts are that it speaks well of Thompson that Martin was gracious and big enough to resign so quickly.

Donning flame-retardent suit ... I hope that Hunter has the same grace and big-heartedness to drop out before the primaries in the event he doesn't pull a Seabiscuit before then and come up fast in the polls. Otherwise, he will only aid Big Government Democrat-Lite candidates Giuliani and Romney by siphoning off many primary votes that would likely otherwise go to Thompson. I would admire Hunter greatly if he made such a sacrifice to help the Republican party achieve true small-government conservatism in the White House.

They probably had a conference call and collectively decided to dig up all the dirt they could on Fred.

Naw, the DuncanDelusionists© will never admit they were wrong and castigate the rest of us for not ‘giving him a chance’ or it’s some CFR/Media/Bush conspiracy..
