GOP hopeful Hunter says missile defense would be one of his top priorities as president

A Republican presidential candidate says that if elected president he would move forward with plans to put anti-ballistic missile shield in Eastern Europe -- to counter any potential missile threat from Iran or a rogue terrorist group.

Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-California) had served as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee until the Democrats took control of Congress in January. The California lawmaker also has one of the most extensive national defense resumes among the presidential field. Hunter says if he becomes president, he will make the missile defense shield one of his top priorities.

"At some point we may have a rogue missile coming at the United States -- if not fired by a nation state, perhaps fired by a rogue terrorist group. Russia has protested that they think that the defensive systems would basically negate their offensive missile capability," he says.

Hunter says he has an idea that could alleviate Russian concerns, and even get them to cooperate with the U.S. "We place Aegis missile cruisers in the Black Sea. That's directly under the path that Iranian missiles would take if they were fired on Western Europe. And if we put those [warships there] in partnership [with] and with the cooperation of the Russians, that would give us a fairly significant deterrent factor," he argues.

Hunter says the United States must deploy some kind of missile shield in Eastern Europe to offset what he sees as a developing Iranian missile capability.

Sounds pretty expensive...lots of people to buy off in order to put our missiles all over the place. Lots of upkeep, lots of military people all over the eastern european front.

We could have a Hunter v. Obama race.

A race between the Star Wars money and the Carbon Credit trading money.

How depressing.

missile defense is important but the best chance for peace is regime change in Iran.

Let’s try to be realistic here. I like Hunter, but he’s not getting the nomination. We need his expertise as DefSec under Fred. Best and brightest.

If this is true, then I can’t support him anymore.

If he refuses to serve this nation in an executive office other than President, he is nothing but an attention-seeking greedy fool on a high horse. Too bad. I had high hopes for the guy, but I guess he’s no better than the rest of the idiots in America.

Sigh...

Darn. Can Hunter do ANYTHING wrong?
He has all the right priorities - illegal immigration, missile defense, WoT. He’s the guy I’d LOVE to see leading.

Unfortunately, there’s only one thing between Hunter and the WH: elections.

If it weren’t for those, Hunter would be in like Flynn.

Me too. I would like to see him move to the top tier candidates slot. Doesn't look as though it will happen though.
