Pelosi: Clinton Camp Played Gender Card Nation's First Female Speaker Says Perception of 'All-Boys' Club' May Be Exploited By RICK KLEIN

Nov. 5, 2007 —

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, R-Calif., said Monday that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., hasn't been treated differently because she's the only woman in the presidential race, but added that her campaign appears to have been trying to exploit that perception in the wake of last week's Democratic debate.

Pelosi, the nation's first female House speaker, told ABCNEWS.com in an interview that she didn't agree with observers who thought Clinton was drawing particular heat because she's a woman.

"[Sen. Clinton] said it best: They're 'piling on' -- or whatever the words were -- 'because I'm the front-runner.' That's why they're piling on," said Pelosi. "If she was in third place, they wouldn't say, 'Let's go attack a woman.'"

Perception Matters

But in distributing a Web video splicing together her opponents' attacks -- and in raising money off her debate performance, with her campaign manager writing that Clinton "is one strong woman" -- her campaign appears to be exploiting perceptions of Clinton facing down a field of aggressive male challengers, Pelosi said.

"I think the campaign is trying to take advantage of another -- probably people who didn't even watch the debate, to say, 'Oh, they were really rude,' or something like that, and that has some salience," said Pelosi, who has said she does not plan to endorse a candidate in the Democratic primary. "You know, every vote counts." Last Tuesday's debate in Philadelphia has set off a wide debate over the role of gender in the presidential race.

I really don't thinkthat a lot of the elites in the Democratic party are very fond of Clinton. She's much to heavy handed and demands too much loyalty to her and her alone. That has to step on a lot of toes among all those elitists.

She also doesn't seem to be able to handle being questioned very well. She doesn't have her husband's charm and charisma, and doesn't think on her feet well.

I'm wondering if she is getting set up to take a Howard Dean like plunge from the forefront, and they will support someone like Obama that they can influence much more easily.

Or maybe she really does have the kind of support that she seems to have and I just can't believe it because I'm not a communist.

Nasty Nancy must remember that only 149,000 morons voted for her in her home district of Moonbats. We have seen her true power over the last ten months: absolutely ZERO! an 11% approval rating heading to ZERO quickly.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, R-Calif.

I didn't get much of a chance to watch the news last week - did I miss something...say like the mass relocation of the entire human race to another planet?

They should. No one with half a brain would ever vote for a Democrat.

Oh, darlin’ believe me - it’s takes everything I have to keep my sanity. I just smile and nod my head and when they argue with me, I just whip out that line we Belles save for the end of the argument:

“That’s okay, shugah - you believe what you want. And I’ll believe what I know.”

If I had to play armchair shrink, I’d say Pelousy is afraid of Hillary being elected and thereby reduced to No. 2 status as far as women leaders go, so she’d rather have for President one of the two wimps running alongside.

Excellent analysis...a classic case of Queen Bee Syndrome.

A surprising moment of truth-telling. This is exactly the Clinton camp's target audience: women (many nominally Republican) who didn't even watch the debate, but will just see the headline, assume that the "Old Boys Club" was being mean to Hillary, decide to vote for her to make up for that "meanness", and sleepwalk to the election without troubling themselves to find out any more about it.

I was thinking the same thing! Under President Clinton, Speaker Pelosi would become even more irrelevant than she is now. She might even prefer a GOP president so she can be leader of the opposition, and be in the limelight. Of course she and Reid have been so pathetic neither qualifies as a “leader.”

Pelosi was really loving being one of the most powerful women in America and then along came Hillary to run for Prez and rain on her parade.

Pelosi can't stand Hillary.
