Mac the Immigration Debate

Lopez: How did you think Hillary handled that immigration question at last week’s Democratic debate?

Mac Donald: Hillary Clinton cracked apart on the impossible politics of amnesty. Contrary to her wobbling response, it does not make “a lot of sense” to give drivers licenses to illegal aliens. Doing so only further rewards law-breaking and encourages more people to enter the country illegally or overstay their visas. But Clinton was torn between the belief that she needed to pander to the elite media and to illegal alien advocates, and her gut awareness that they don’t elect the President, the American people do. So she couldn’t get out any position — for or against the licensing give-away — without immediately contradicting it. Clinton’s attempt to blame the Bush administration for Spitzer’s reckless plan was laughable. She said that the New York governor is trying to “fill the vacuum left by the failure of this administration to bring about comprehensive immigration reform.” Translation: “Bush has failed to provide amnesty for all of the country’s 12 million illegals; Spitzer at least is doing so for New York’s own half a million to a million illegals.” Nothing, besides amnesty, links “comprehensive immigration reform” to a license give-away.

Note the irony: If state or local officials try ever so tentatively to “fill the vacuum left by the failure of this administration” to enforce immigration rules, the advocates will cry: “Immigration is a federal responsibility! Local politicians and police must sit on their hands when faced with immigrant law-breakers!” But when state or city officials enact legalization policies, that is applauded as taking responsibility for a “serious problem,” in Clinton’s words, that the federal government has ignored.

The Spanish radio and TV stations in the Washington, D.C. area ran commercials for a month urging their audiences to “vote for those who cannot vote.” A small-minded, paranoid person could also have interpreted those commercials as urging illegal immigrants to vote, but surely not.

We need an immigration policy that upholds our values and welcomes people to this country with marketable skills who speak English and are positioned to contribute to America's prosperity rather than become public charges. This ought to be the basis of a sound conservative approach towards immigration. Its not a complicated issue at all and the American people have made it clear what they want to see done.

The interesting thing is that Obama and Edwards criticize Clinton for being on both sides of the issue, instead of squarely on the side of licenses for illegals as are they.

Yes, I noticed that. Also, what she was saying was, in essence, poor Eliot has to give the illegals drivers licenses because Congress failed to pass “immigration reform” that would have granted them all amnesty, made them legal, and allowed them to get licenses. Russert’s next question should have been, why do you support amnesty for 12 million-plus illegal aliens?

Giuliani supporters should keep in mind that nominating a NY liberal to run against a NY liberal will take away the Republican’s most powerful issue against Hillary. Note what problems a question out on the fringe of the immigration/amnesty debate has caused for her. Think what tough questions, or statements during debates from a non-open borders Republican would do to Hillary’s credibility.

All this uproar over driver’s licenses for illegals in one state has caused Hillary more trouble than anything thus far. Nominate Rudy and she gets a pass on that and all the far more damaging questions she should be required to answer concerning her open borders/amnesty votes and plans if elected.

Just how many times has Clinton voted for illegals in some way or another this year? IS it like 9 times or something?

The local Spanish newspaper are all pushing for the drivers licenses. Talk about a Fifth Column!

Excellent points! Even in New York State this didn’t fly - people are solidly opposed to Spitzer’s proposal. Old Eliot has turned out to be even worse than I thought!

The main Spanish language station (in the DC area) used to play lots of Puerto Rican music. Then, there was an ownership change, and a reformating, and now they play mostly Mexican music.

There aren't many Mexicans around here ~ consequently, they lost most of their audience. Whatever the message was, it didn't get through.
