Fred Thompson Calls Mike Huckabee A "Pro-Life Liberal"
WKRN ^

Posted on 11/07/2007 12:58:23 PM PST by jaybeegee

Fred Thompson stops by Steve Gill’s radio show and reacts to the Pat Robertson endorsement of Rudy Giuliani, talks immigration reform and shares his impression of Governor Mike Huckabee as a “pro-life liberal.”

“When you’re very, very low and you come in for a while just very low then that’s considered to be a surge in politics. He’s doing better.

He’s a good man but he’s a pro-life liberal. He’s right on the pro-life part, but he’s a liberal. You look at his taxes in the state you look at what he said about immigration. You know he worked against any attempt to control immigration coming in through his home state…”

~ Fred Thompson on Mike Huckabee on the Steve Gill Show

Fred also lets Rudy (yes, he calls him Rudy) have it on gun licensing. Audio here.

Actually I am glad you brought the partial birth abortion ban up. If Fred thinks that federal bans on abortion violate federalism why did he vote for the partial birth abortion ban. It seems funny that he would vote for a bill which is based on a very expansive view of the commerce clause and then cry “federalism” when given the opportunity to pass a constitutional amendment which by definition cannot violate teh 10th Amendment.

Still, being robbed of my money is not as bad as being forced to support immoral stuff.

It's your money that the government uses to support immoral stuff.

It is all about the perfect being the enemy of the good. We’ve had this argument about candidates who are so focused on the perfect, they don’t do good. Thompson may strive for Federalism, but he also has voted to limit abortion. He understands that any step forward is good. Others have preached federalism and have voted against limiting abortion because the limits didn’t meet their perfect ideal.

“His comments on Sunday went beyond saying that he thought it was a state issue. He also made two comments which suggested that he was or has been ambigious or opposed to state criminalization. In the first, comment - which may have only been explaining what he thought before seeing his daughters ultrasound - he indicated that he didn’t want to pass a law which might sent a girl, her parents, or the family doctor to prison. In his second comment were he was clearly expressing his present views he said that even though he thought an unborn child was a person he was concerned about making criminals out of young women. So, at best Fred’s position on abortion is unclear - he certainly is not the pro-life champion that many are trying to make him out as being.”

And where did he say this? Post a transcript/link.

I think you’re blowing smoke and Fred said nothing of the sort.

Robertson's endorsement means nothing to Pro-Life voters. They will not vote for Rudy, unless and untill, he is the last man standing against the dems.

As far as I'm concerned, Robertson just sold his name to the liberal left of our party. Sad.

***Maybe. Or maybe Thompson is worried. Huckabee is beating him over at Intrade, which was quite accurate when it came to the Ron Paul upsurge. And the new FredThompsonDropout contract is trading at about 1/2 the value of Huckabee, with a 40% ask price.

I guarantee you Thompson is not worried about Intrade.

Good grief.

“It seems funny that he would vote for a bill which is based on a very expansive view of the commerce clause and then cry “federalism” when given the opportunity to pass a constitutional amendment which by definition cannot violate teh 10th Amendment.”

How does the President pass a Constitutional amendment? Short answer, he doesn’t. The President has no role whatsoever in amending the Constitution.

From the Constitution:

Article V: Amendment Process

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.

While I agreee that Taigunner Joe is way off-base on his assessment of Thompson, I HOPE that his suspension is temporary and that he joins us again on Free Republic. I see fellow FReepers the same way I see Republican politicians -- none of them are perfect, but all of them are worthy to some degree.

If I remember right, ol' Tailgunner Joe has penned many an enjoyable post and contributed much to the FR that I enjoy so much. I hope he joins us again. I for one am willing to forgive him his trespasses against Thompson, and his unwitting sabotage of saving lives in the abortion issue (which is what overturning RvW and giving it back to the states will do MUCH MORE EFFECTIVELY AND QUICKLY than Quixotically seeking some national ban on abortion that will never get the votes to pass). I look forward to seeing Tailgunner Joe once again an active FReeper along with the rest of us.
