Fred Thompson Calls Mike Huckabee A "Pro-Life Liberal"
WKRN ^

Posted on 11/07/2007 12:58:23 PM PST by jaybeegee

Fred Thompson stops by Steve Gill’s radio show and reacts to the Pat Robertson endorsement of Rudy Giuliani, talks immigration reform and shares his impression of Governor Mike Huckabee as a “pro-life liberal.”

“When you’re very, very low and you come in for a while just very low then that’s considered to be a surge in politics. He’s doing better.

He’s a good man but he’s a pro-life liberal. He’s right on the pro-life part, but he’s a liberal. You look at his taxes in the state you look at what he said about immigration. You know he worked against any attempt to control immigration coming in through his home state…”

~ Fred Thompson on Mike Huckabee on the Steve Gill Show

Well Mr. Tailgunner Joe has left the building, for good!

Mind if I parse that?

If by "for good," you mean "permanently," I doubt it.

But if by "for good," you mean "his departure (of whatever length) is good," I agree.

“Bush banned partial birth abortions on a federal level.”

No, Bush signed a bill passed by Congress to do that. There is not presently the political will in Congress to outlaw all abortions, which is the point made by several other posters.

I’m not arguing that fiscal liberalism is good.

Some people can’t understand the concept of “it’s a state issue” and automatically jump you.

so, we have a movement so that one day it will be. The partial abortion ban is the result and it took a long time to achieve that. We shouldn’t just give up on the push for a pro-life congress just because it might be more pragmatic to pursue a state-by-state solution at this time.

Without that national effort for a pro-life congress, you won’t get the anti-roe judges nominated even if Fred wins.

You know, if you try to reach heaven you may not succeed but at least your feet won’t be stuck in the mud.

Here's the deal. If you have social colapse, fiscal liberalism is inevitable. From my perspective, even on a practical level, social conservatism is the foundation for true fiscal conservatism. It can't exist for long without it.

From a conviction standpoint, I cannot be part of the liberal social agenda as a matter of conscience.

Living in California I hadn’t realized that Huckabee was such a closet leftist. I’m glad folks from Arkansas are bringing the rest of us up to speed.

We Arkansas conservatives are crying out in the FReeper wilderness as loud as we can!

---snip---

In summary, the endorsement convention delegates voted as follows: Fred Thompson 80%; Rudy Giuliani 6.67%; Ron Paul 4.44%; Mike Huckabee 4.44%; Mitt Romney 2.22%, Duncan Hunter 2.22%; John McCain, Tom Tancredo and Allan Keys 0%.

It's telling that the Republican Assembly from his home state doesn't endorse him.

And I completely agree with Thompson on this. Other than abortion, Huckabee governed exactly as Clinton did, sans the bimbo eruptions.

His comments on Sunday went beyond saying that he thought it was a state issue. He also made two comments which suggested that he was or has been ambigious or opposed to state criminalization. In the first, comment - which may have only been explaining what he thought before seeing his daughters ultrasound - he indicated that he didn’t want to pass a law which might sent a girl, her parents, or the family doctor to prison. In his second comment were he was clearly expressing his present views he said that even though he thought an unborn child was a person he was concerned about making criminals out of young women. So, at best Fred’s position on abortion is unclear - he certainly is not the pro-life champion that many are trying to make him out as being.

I am not sure that I would have interpreted Fred’s statement quite as strongly as he did but I think Tailgunner Joe’s interpretation was certainly a reasonable one. Fred was making the same sort of statements that we hear constantly from pro-choice people opposed to abortion and its interesting to note that Fred never said that he would encourage states to pass abortion bans. Whoever suspended Joe’s account should be ashamed of their censorship.

He's right about that. You'd almost think he'd been reading FR.

Thats why I focus on actions, not words. People can read into statements what they want to read into them. Votes, however, are pretty cut and dry.
