Frist says he'll consider running for governor
Knoxville News Sentinel ^ | 11/9/7 | Brad Williams

Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said he will consider running for governor during a visit today to Knoxville, where he's giving two lectures sponsored by the University of Tennessee's Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy.

During his first talk, "Health Care: Back to the Future, 2015," at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Frist - a cardio-thoracic transplant surgeon - recounted seeking Baker's advice on his political campaign and being advised not to run for governor.

Frist said he may have to revisit the former senator on that point.

"I may need to talk to him (again) about that," Frist said.

When asked directly about running for governor, Frist said, "Possibly. I will consider it." He said he didn't decide to run for Senate until 14 months before he did so.

As for his presidential support, Frist said, "I'm with Fred," calling Thompson "straight-talking" and "direct." He said though Thompson has been under fire in the media, "he'll be able to reply and respond to all of that."

I know that I’m excited!

I cannot tell you the last decent senator that we have had in Tennessee!

Please, no. He was the worst and most incompetent Senate leader for the Republicans in decades. We’d have lost his Senate seat to Junior Ford if Fred hadn’t interceded on behalf of Corker’s foundering campaign. I want Frist to stay in permanent retirement. We need a Republican from state government to succeed Pharoah Phil who knows where the bodies are buried.

Although she’s federal now, she did better as a State Senator, and I’d think Marsha Blackburn would be a far superior choice to run for Governor.

That would really been a boon to Tennessee and a sizable upgrade from the current governor. (Always loved TN.)

I’ll offer a very mild defense of Frist in that he was fine as long as he was a backbencher. He was thrust into the job of Majority Leader, which he never sought, and was completely out of his element. You need people used to hand-to-hand combat with rodents in such a position, not someone used to being a follower.

I'm not a fan of Phil by any means but let's remember that when Taxquist was ruining the state with Ned Ray, Al, and Hillary's Tenncare Frist did what? He helped secure funding to keep it going as did Fred. Corruption was rampant in that system and nothing was done. At least Phil had the guts to tell a few of the insurers to knock it off or else Tenncare was gone and I do believe he would have actually did it too. When he did the budget crisis and blackmail the state was under for years finally stopped.

As for Frist tenure as SML? He was a joke. Another so called Conservative Urban Legend Myth. The so called reformer of Medicare took Ned Ray's Al, and yes Hillary's health care plan and called it Medicare reform. IOW money for the Hey Moes. Frist will never get my vote for anything. I'd rather see Chicken John Jay as governor than Frist because he would actually do less damage to us in the long run.
