State Sen. Harri Anne Smith, R-Slocomb, said Tuesday that she has received the unofficial backing of a group of Wiregrass business leaders and plans to run for Congress.
Smith said an announcement could come as soon as next week.
I am honored that I do have the backing of the business leadership here as well as a lot of other individuals across the Wiregrass who have called and are encouraging me, Smith said Tuesday after meeting with the group.
Several Wiregrass business leaders and other residents have been meeting since U.S. Rep. Terry Everett, R-Rehobeth, announced plans to retire at the end of his term in January 2009. Party primaries are in June of next year.

This is good news. Everything I’ve read about Harri Anne Smith has been encouraging.
That may be a very crowded field. George Wallace, Jr. may also seek the seat (as a Republican). He narrowly lost it to Everett in 1992 when he was a Dem.
Can someone on the ground explain why this is good or not good? Thank you.
Harri Anne Smith is one of the most conservative members of the Alabama legislature. That sounds good to me.
