NOW @ SDSU's bake sale charges men more for the same goods
Imagine going to McDonald's and hearing that, because you're a white male, you pay full price for a Big Mac. Meanwhile, the girl behind you pays three-quarters of the total amount for the same thing.
NOW (National Organization for Women) @ SDSU brought that reality to San Diego State yesterday at the Aztec Center by holding a pay equity bake sale. The prices for cookies reflected the difference of pay between genders and races.
"It's just to raise awareness," NOW @ SDSU Co-President Amanda Whitehead said. "A lot of people don't realize that white women make 75 percent of every dollar a white man makes or Hispanic women make 50 percent. It's pretty ridiculous. When they actually have to buy the cookies, it puts it into perspective."
White men, of whom NOW @ SDSU says make the most money of any demographic, were charged a dollar for the same cookie a Hispanic woman would pay 50 cents for. The group broke down the prices for white, Hispanic, black and Asian men and women, using pay scale statistics from NOW and www.payequity.org.
"It's a more unique way of showing the differences without just showing the statistics all the time," NOW @ SDSU Co-President Ashley Frazier said.
This was a creative way for NOW @ SDSU to present students and faculty with the facts, but some people didn't like the way the cookie crumbled.
Finance and statistics senior Adam Hyman passed out free doughnuts to men only after seeing the bake sale, disbelieving in the point NOW @ SDSU was trying to make. "I feel that America isn't anti-minority (or) anti-woman," Hyman said. "(I did this) to prove a point that if a woman were really getting paid 75 percent of what a man is, they could just quit their job and go work for somebody else.
"If this discrimination was real, then a company that only hires women would be better at business."
Furthermore, men are more likely to work overtime and call in sick less. Additionally, men are more likely to work dangerous and/or physically demanding jobs that pay more and salaried occupations that require long hours.
There are many reasonable and understandable explanations for the pay disparity between genders but NOW never gets tired of trotting out this "injustice" for each new class of incoming freshmen.
Wasn’t there a conservative bake sale a year or so ago where they doctored the prices and they were shut down by the school?
Bet Amanda doesn't put this on her resume when she graduates.

I heard somewhere that once certain elements are factored in, like the amount of time spent unemployed & not looking, education, etc. the average woman actually make a little more than the average man.
The men shouldn’t whine - they can go to the barber and take their wife with them. The husband will pay half what his wife has to pay for a haircut. From the same barber.
Barber shops are a major source of discrimination, IMHO.
Utter nonsense. Where do people get statistics like this? The dollar a woman makes is equal in value to the dollar a white man makes. A one dollar sandwich costs the same on the market for a woman as it does for anyone else.
There is no such thing as a 75 cent dollar or a 50 cent dollar. Amanda Whitehead should be ashamed for even suggesting such a thing.
Socialists don't gain any ground without inventing injustices that simply don't exist.
White guys make more money and that’s correct. They forgot to do a little more research. They seem to ignore women SPEND MORE MONEY than white males.
Now exactly where do they get that money to spend?

Actually, I see some interesting possibilities here. Get a whole bunch of different kinds of cookies, and only sell a particular type to a particular type of person, for a set price.
The idea is to set it up so that cookies are sold off based on discriminatory federal and State laws, and social norms.
For example, the “white male” cookie costs a lot, because it has to subsidize the price of many of the other cookies. If you want more than one, you have to buy other cookies and eat them first.
Even more expensive is the “married white person” cookie, that also has to pay a marriage surcharge.
The “gay” cookie is the same as the “disadvantaged racial minority” cookie. Which I’m sure would be appreciated.
Beside the “disadvantaged racial minority” cookie, is the “successful racial minority” cookie. The difference is that the “successful” cookie is stuffed with sweet creme filling, but the “disadvantaged” cookie is stuffed with bitter alum creme.
You can buy the “illegal alien” cookie for a lot less, but it is made with lard instead of vegetable oil and may give you the runs. The tray is surrounded by a partial fence that is easy to reach through. But it has a virtual fence that nobody can see.
The “handicapped” cookie has to be located closest to the customers, and has to have a special handle to make it easy to eat. It is irregularly shaped.
You have to say “Allah Akbar”, before you can buy the crescent shaped “Muslim cookie”, but the “Christian cookie” cannot have a cross on it, and has to be labeled a “Holiday cookie” with the word “Christian” marked out.
The “Democrat” cookie is promised to be enormous, weigh tons, take a vast number of bakers to cook, with equal portions for everybody, costs trillions of dollars, be made overnight, and exists only on paper. Every other nation that has tried to make a Democrat cookie has failed. They collapse because they are full of hot air and gooshy bulls**t.
You have to make your own “Republican” cookie, unless you can afford to buy one from the Halliburton Cookie Company. But it is the best tasting cookie, as you baked it yourself.
