Fred Thompson will pick up the support of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) tomorrow, according to two Republicans familar with the decision.
For a candidate who came up empty-handed last week when three prominent Christian conservatives endorsed GOP hopefuls and is falling in both national and early state polls, the move comes at a critical time.
NRLC is the most prominent anti-abortion group in the country, with affiliates in all 50 states and over 3,000 local chapters.
A spokesperson for the organization declined to comment on their endorsement decision, but Thompson was likely rewarded for his strong pro-life voting record in the Senate. As Thompson frequently touts on the stump, he rated out at 100% on the group's report card.

This is HUGH!!!
National Right to Life does a lot of good work but they have gotten so pragmatic in the last few years that they often times sell pro-lifers short. For example, they actually opposed the proposed South Dakota Law to ban abortion because they were afraid it would backfire. Similarily they are now (possibly) going to endorse Fred Thompson who is at best only moderately conservative on abortion. He opposes our pro-life platform which calls for a human life amendment and has made public statements - including two on his meet the press interview last week - which suggest that he is uncomfortable with even the states passing laws which would criminalize 1st trimester abortions.
This is a race for the whitehouse, not who is the hardest core conservative. They chose very well.
Isn’t it going to be fun around here when Duncan Hunter withdraws and endorses Fred Thompson?
I’m sure that a lot of things surprise people who have sold their soul to support Mitt Romney.
At NRLC, they, unlike your average MittWit, are able to discern between ratings that are tainted by a disagreement on CFR and actual pro-life votes.
No, they realize that 1) The president has NO ROLE in the amendment process and 2) If pro-lifers do not get behind one “pro-life” candidate the following will happen: 1) Guiliani nominated, 2) Pro-lifers and conservatives stay home, 3) Hillary elected and 4) Roe will NOT be overturned for another generation.
Counter, your all or nothing strategy will be a disaster.
Fred may not be your first choice but he is a good choice. The NRTL has seen the same polls we have. Rudy is pulling away. Even the NRTL endorsement would not be enough to make up the support needed for Hunter, but this could go a long way toward making up the difference for Fred. Thompson is still within reach if more Conservatives get behind him.
Actually, I think male voters are more likely to support legal abortion than females. The massive army of women ready to storm the polls to elect a “pro-choice” candidate is a media created myth. Women do vote more liberal than men, but it’s because they want socialist goodies and handouts, not because of abortion.
That having been said, you are right about this being a tactical battle.
Fox and MSNBC have confirmed it.

Go Fred Go!
On to the NRA next! :)
At a campaign stop in South Carolina, Thompson indicated that he had given Russert's question more thought and sought to clarify his position. "I can run on the Republican Platform. ... I have a different priority in terms of how to achieve the same objective. I think Roe v. Wade should be changed with good judges following the law.
[E]ven when Republicans had control of the Senate, we could not move that (constitutional amendment) forward."
DAMN!!
I was just getting ready to post that the NRA will likely be next!
you cant reason with people that are unwilling to take off their blinders.
Are they as much Thompson Hater’s as they are Rudy supporters? I can’t tell the difference!
Trust being the operative word....and Fred is THE trustworthy candidate, no doubt about that.
