Veteran film and television director Delbert Mann, who won an Oscar in 1955 for romantic drama "Marty" has died, his family confirmed in a statement on Monday. He was 87.
Mann died of pneumonia on Sunday in Los Angeles' Cedars Sinai Medical Center a statement from the director's son Fred Mann said.
Born in Kansas in 1920, Mann, who served as a bomber pilot during World War II, cut his directorial teeth in stage and television work before going on to enjoy Academy-Award winning fame.
His televised adaptation of Paddy Chayefsky's script for "Marty", starring Rod Steiger as the kind-hearted Bronx butcher who finds love with a schoolteacher, earned him his break in movies.
The film version, starring Ernest Borgnine in the lead role, ended up winning four Oscars -- best director, best picture, best actor and best screenplay.
Mann's wife, Ann, died in 2001. The couple are survived by three sons, Fred, David and Steven. A daughter, Susan, died in an car accident in 1976.
RIP.
RIP.
‘Marty’ was a wonderful film.
Yes it was!
“Whatta you wanna do tonight?”
“I dunno.. Whatta you wanna do?”
I don’t remember his friend’s name, but remember what a jerk he was. If I had been Marty, I’d have punched out his lights when he ripped Marty’s girl at the dance hall. What a putz!
