Clinton library a closed book
Few of ex-first lady's files released by her husband's archive

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Visitors to the gleaming glass-and-steel William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Library can see the former First Lady Hillary Clinton's gold-embroidered 1997 inaugural ball gown and hear Clinton extol his wife's contributions to his administration.
In time, Hillary Clinton "will deserve a lot of the credit" for the comprehensive health coverage that the former president predicts is on the horizon, he gushes in the audio for an exhibit celebrating "The Work of the First Lady."
But while tourists wandered through the museum one afternoon last week, awed by the bulletproof presidential limousine and the life-size replica of the Oval Office, the tables in the library's reading room sat empty -- unoccupied by the scholars, journalists and opposition researchers who might be expected to pore over the unique historical record of a White House that featured a leading role for a current presidential front-runner.
For good reason. Almost three years after the library's opening and nearly two years after the administration's archives became subject to federal open-records laws, only a small fraction of the archives has been opened to the public.
Virtually all of the 3 million pages of documents that detail the internal workings of the health-care task force that Hillary Clinton headed remain stored away in boxes, for example.
Although lengthy delays in releasing White House papers are typical, the presidential candidacy of a former first lady presents an unprecedented circumstance. Processing by government archivists is partly responsible for the slow pace.

And Sandy Berger's socks no doubt.
Just another coating of teflon on these two morally-corrupt, ethically-challenged dubious duo.
Get used to it folks. This creature is No.44.

From the article...
As I understand it, Bush is the culprit behind our inability to demand Presidential papers. Evidently there has a been some activity on the Executive Order though. I wasn't aware of that, but now it looks as if Bush might appeal.
Coming so close on the heels of the most criminally inclined Presidency in this nation's history, I was angry when Bush delayed acess to Clinton papers.
It seems to me that the Bush and Clinton folks seem a little too chumy for comfort. If you don't elect to have your justice department go after so clearly a flawed character, I have problems already. But when Bush then blocked the light of day to shine on Clinton's papers, it made me angry.
Just our gentleman/president still making nicey-nice.
I’m beginning to wonder just who was it who managed to prevail upon Dubya to stand and fight the Battle of Florida.
The only candidate in the Bush camp I can think of with sufficient cojones would be mother Barbara.
Both Hillary and Barry Obama have either lost or sealed their past public record in bureaucratic lock-boxes. No one will be able to research their real records, so all that is known about them is manufactured by their respective spin machines. Both are empty suits.
Saturday's Chicago Tribune has an article that roped-a-dope one reporter looking for Barry Obama's records while in Illinois government.
The offical reply from the Obama campaign centered around:
* file drawers may have been purged after he left Illinois government, or
* maybe he has some stuff but he doesn't have an archivist on staff to sort it, or
* maybe if you ask for something specific they may be able to give out a sanitized version of the public record.
In both camps, the attitude toward those interested in actual history on the candidate is "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".
But, they want you to vote for them based on their "record".
I guess you can't "Swift Boat" a candidate if their boat is lost in a sea of bullsh*t. That's what they hope anyway.
Good point.
You could be right, or perhaps his advisors.
As I remember it, he stayed out of it pretty much. And I honestly think that appearance was the right tone to set.
I would have had my team all over it though. And he seemed to.

Color me dense, but I wouldn't like for a sitting presidents papers to be made public, particularly in a time of war -
however, the Clintons have been out of office for nearly 8 years - it's time - and NOTHING is denying her to release hers...
So we should lay down a bet. All of GW’s papers will be released before Clinton’s? Anyone wanna bet on this? GW leaves in January 2009. I’m betting that we don’t see even half of Clinton’s records by 2012...with almost all of Bush’s records released by that point.
