Sunrise and Sunset could be affected by global warming.

(ZURICH, SWITZERLAND) - Rising temperatures due to global warming could affect the most basic unit of measurement known to man - time, disrupting solar calculations that can be predicted centuries into the future.

"The basic premise is as the earth's temperature rises, the atmosphere thickens, gaining mass which will exert a measurable pressure upon the planetary axis of rotation", says Dr. Heimel Van Ulderwert of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich.

Dr. Van Ulderwert presented his theory today in a report issued at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and cautions that "although the calculations are sound we won't know exactly the extent this effect could have on world economies".

"As the Earth's atmosphere thickens it will act as an automobile brake slowing the axis rotation; Modern time keeping will not be affected", referring to clocks, "but culturally, this could significantly affect societies that rely on predicted, exact sunrise and sunset times in ceremonial and religous activities" Dr. Van Ulderwert said.

Other activities that could be affected are hunting and fishing in European countries where sunrise/sunset times are used to regulate when game and certain fish can be taken. "If the sunrise or sunset is delayed by a few minutes there may be instances where fish or game taken could legitimately be within the allowable time by virtue of the sun being visible, but would be considered poaching as the sunset or sunrise time would be inaccurate on the published tables", said Chance Hollings of the EU Directorate-General for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs office. "We will have to address these issues on a case by case basis as they happen", he added.

Satire? You just haven’t searched long enough. I’m sure there is some grant money going to research this type of thing. And - good satire is when you can’t figure out what’s real and what’s fake (you got me!!).

let me ask this question in a very technical term.....huh?

No, it’s Daylight Savings Time that causes Global Warming. The sun rises earlier and sets later so it gets hotter.

Makes about as much sense as the article.

Found this curious little bit while looking to see if venus is tidally locked to the sun:

A curious aspect of Venus’ orbit and rotation periods is that the 583.92-day interval between successive close approaches to the Earth is almost exactly equal to 5 Venusian solar days (precisely, 5.001444 of these), making approximately the same face visible from Earth at each close approach. Whether this relationship arose by chance or is the result of some kind of tidal locking with the Earth is unknown.

Hey, if we used “Algore” science, we could extrapolate when we wouldn’t have a day at all based on the shortening of the days now.

How does the Earth’s mass increase in a closed system?

Simple! It's inhabitants keep eating junk food.

I have looked at those wind generators in Palm Springs area, and I am wondering if their presence could be altering the climate...as the wind generators extract energy from the wind, there has to be a change in the wind velocity, and resultant change of wind in areas adjacent the wind farms...conservation of energy, would apply...

A decrease in wind velocity, due the increased friction of the wind generators, would have to be followed with a increase in air pressure, eg, a high pressure area near the farms, and down wind....and as a thought, all these wind farms could be slowly the earth’s rotation....

I thought the earth’s rotation is slowing . Isn’t that why they add seconds to clocks every so often?

“The basic premise is as the earth’s temperature rises, the atmosphere thickens, gaining mass which will exert a measurable pressure upon the planetary axis of rotation”, says Dr. Heimel Van Ulderwert of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich.

The effect is real and is called conservation of angular momentum. As the atmosphere warms, it expands slightly causing its moment of inertia to increase.

Now, the "quote", as written, is pure gibberish, but I suspect this is due more to the reporter being a mental midget in the area of science and physics than to the Doctor being wrong.

Here the answer: Genesis 8:22; While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease!

The basic premise is...a G*d damned LIE !!!

If I have a mole of gold at 25 degrees C how much more gold do I have if I bring it to 100 degrees C. None it still has a mass of one mole.

Doctor?!

He must have consulted with Doctor Bombay, Doctor J, Doctor Vinnie Goombatz and Doctor Octopus on this.

I don’t think there is any way that would increase the mass.

In any event, if you check the posters reply post to mine, you’ll see it’s just satire.

It is true that the earth gains mass by collecting space dust with its gravity, but this is hardly due to global warming.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

How does the atmosphere “thicken” as it warms, doesn’t air expand as it warms? It seems to me that warmer air would be thinner, not thicker.
