In what sounds like a scene out of Prison Break, a Broward Sheriff's Office inmate fashioned a fake bomb out of socks, newspaper and radio wires and threatened to blow it up if jailers didn't let him go.

Then the violence got real. The man produced a shank -- a homemade knife -- and tried to stab a detention deputy. He also grabbed the deputy's pepper spray and sprayed it.

The inmate was subdued by a team of deputies, but not before inflicting minor injuries on two of them.

One of the injured, the original deputy, suffered cuts and the other a twisted knee.

Semil Alcena, 34, will be charged with battery on a law officers and making a false bomb report after the incident early Tuesday morning. He was already facing some hard time for a series of sexual batteries.

The deputy was inspecting cells when Alcena handed him a note threatening to detonate the bomb.

After the man was subdued, the bomb squad responded but determined that the bomb wasn't real.

The deputy who suffered cuts was treated at Broward General Medical Center.

The very fact that this inmate was able to get as far as he did with his fake bomb suggests that the Broward County Sherriff’s Office doesn’t trust the searches and pat-downs performed on inmates prior to their being incarcerated.

While it is relatively normal to err on the side of caution in such a situation, they should have known better than to buy into this story if they had any faith in their own security system for controlling inmates.
