Very good point. Osborne certainly knew how to lead. Nebraska had something special. It would be nice to see it the way it was...or at least something close.

And that formula worked well for the huskers. They were stupid to change it.

The thing I liked best about the huskers was their ability to stomp teams with “superior” players of “superior” talent. I especially loved the tennessee vs nebraska game that I think was osborn’s last game...but I could be wrong. The tennessee quarterback went on to be a bigshot in the NFL. But he couldn’t do a dam thing against nebraska. I loved that game.

When they fired solich, all that went out the window. Never again will the huskers be a team of regualar farm boys that beat the “talented” teams.

Also, it used to be that the sports commentators always criticized nebraska and talked like they didn’t deserve the rankings they got. That’s part of what made me like nebraska. Everyone would say how the huskers just got lucky and then every time they would kick a$$ again. It was hilarious! Then about 10-15 years ago, the commentators started talking up the huskers like they had been husker fans all along.

If you havn't figured it out by now, I was a huge devaney-osborn fan. Sadly, my beloved husker spirit is dead and gone forever. Until they bring back the option and running plays and start showing preference to local and semi local kids in recruiting, I don't care if they never win another game.

I have problems equating coach Osborne and character building. I seem to remember a running back named Phillips who liked to beat-up the coeds. Osborne coddled him time and time again. Phillips played at the next level, but got into trouble everywhere he played.

If my memory serves me right, Phillips is doing time now. There were others similar to this, but I can’t remember them now.

I am assuming you know all of the inside details of what went on between Osborne and Phillips. I think it is very unfortunate the direction that Phillips chose to take. Osborne could not choose for him. I don’t know for sure, but I am certain that for every one Phillips, there were a hundred Brook Berringers.

Everytime I hear an Uniformed no nothing talk about the situation condemn Tom Osborn for Larence Phillips I see a very jealous fan of another team....Dr Tom was trying to help a young man and doesn’t deserve the condemnation he has received...May someone try to help me out if I ever need it....Phillips just P**sed away the chance...for anyone who says DR Tom played LP to win go back and watch the tape..LP was needed at all....

You are correct. Osborne covered for, excused and interfered with the prosecutions of his thug players. From a 2001 article from Debbie Schlussel (here)
In 1993, when his player, Christian Peter, sexually assaulted Miss Nebraska Natalie Kuijvenhoven, George [magazine] reported that Osborne minimized the serious nature of the assault, questioned her motivation, making up a baseless story that her boyfriend had been cut from the team. After convicted and sentenced, Osborne suspended Peter for only a practice game.

When Kathy Redmond reported Peter's two rapes against her, Osborne questioned her motivation – fabricating allegations that her sister had been raped, too, and she wanted the same attention from family members as her sister. He also minimized the brutal assault by player, Lawrence Phillips on his former girlfriend, attacking the eye-witness account of Sandy Worm, who saw him drag her by the hair down three flights of stairs and then pounding her head against the wall.

"There was no brutal beating," Osborne told George.

None of this is to mention Osborne-defended players (like Tyrone Williams and Riley Washington) who shot at people or (like Jason Jenkins) took out a victim's eye. "I'm certain there was no intent to hit anyone with gunfire," said Osborne. According to George, "Lincoln County Attorney Gary Lacy complained publicly that in a string of cases Osborne had used 'his influence to disrupt the criminal justice system.'" Interfering with investigations, obstructing justice.

A real paragon of virtue there!

Dennis Franchione is available - maybe he’d be a good fit. ;-)

Must be true-— no reporter would make up or embellish a story due to hatred of a Football program......nooooooo...we can always rely of the medie for the truth......

Dr Osborne is a good man ..I’m certain that these players were not angels but neither did Dt Tom feild a team full of animals...but jealuousy of a program or hatred of Footbal in general will make anyone see just the bad or even only the worse side of a situation.

You might want to read Debbie’s article (at the link) about how she was harassed by Dr. Tom after her article came out.
