WASHINGTON: The White House announced Monday that it had reached a deal with the Iraqi government to negotiate a formal agreement defining long-term relations between the two nations, including the legal status of American military forces remaining in Iraq.
The "Declaration of Principles" signed Monday via video link by President George W. Bush and the Iraqi prime minister, Nuri Kamal al-Maliki, does not specify the eventual number of American troops nor the length of their deployment. That issue is certain to be central in the 2008 presidential campaign that will be under way as American and Iraqi negotiators work toward a July deadline on a treaty governing relations between the two countries.
But senior administration officials stressed the significance of the agreement signed Monday, saying that it was leading to a far more durable political, economic and security relationship than is possible under the current United Nations resolution, which serves as the foundation under international law for the American-led effort in Iraq.

MOST EXCELLENT NEWS!
In a statement released after the signing, Prime Minister Maliki praised the agreement and stressed the importance of maintaining a strong relationship between his country and the United States.
"It was built by the brave sacrifices made by both peoples for a democratic and free Iraq," he said.
I really like it....Harry and Nancy have some explaining to do....HEHEHE
In addition, our presence there would have a blanketing effect on large terrorist operations in the area and we could create anti-terror training schools for troubled nations should they need assistance. Not only that, but I would hope that Iraq would offer a large enough area for such an operation without charge, considering the fact that our warriors sacrificed their lives and limbs to free the nation from such a tyrant.
And finally, if we were to pick up and leave, lock, stock and barrel, it would be the stupidest decision we could ever make for a host of reasons.
Never make the MSM news.
Pomegranates are everywhere. There’s a limited-time pomegranate flavored 7Up (which is tasty, BTW), I’ve had some tasty pomegranate flavored Icebreaker mints... and yet, I saw pomegranates at the store yesterday at 2 for $5. Ever try to eat one of those? Better to get one of those cool one-arm bandit orange squeezers and tackle it that way. The juice is delicious, in fact, making a pomegranate ice cream smoothie is incomparable. And really good for you. ;’) Thanks E.
I bet they’ll have some of the longest face you’ve every seen when they hear this news.
I hope so!
Not only have we won,....but we are NOT going home, for awhile!
The United States also pledged to support Iraq's economic development and to provide financial and technical assistance. Significantly, the document committed the United States to support Iraq in receiving "preferential trading conditions," including joining the World Trade Organization and receiving most-favored-nation trading status with Washington.

And so the Battle of Iraq is to be brought to an end, in T.S. Eliot's phrase, "not with a bang but a whimper."
With the eyes of the world focused on the Middle East peace talks in Annapolis, Md., President Bush's war tsar, Lieutenant General Douglas Lute, quietly announced that the American and Iraqi governments will start talks early next year to bring about an end to the allied occupation by the close of Mr. Bush's presidency.
The negotiations will bring to a formal conclusion the U.N. Chapter 7 Security Council involvement in the occupation and administration of Iraq, and are expected to reduce the number of American troops to about 50,000 troops permanently stationed there but largely confined to barracks, from the current 164,000 forces on active duty.
"The basic message here should be clear. Iraq is increasingly able to stand on its own. That's very good news. But it won't have to stand alone," General Lute yesterday told reporters in the White House.
Bringing the war to a close by the end of 2008 will ensure that the next president will face a fait accompli in Iraq, a fact that will further remove from the presidential election the Iraq war as an issue of contention.
