Cessna has become the latest airframe manufacturer to tap into China's growing aircraft production expertise, with the US airframer picking AVIC I subsidiary Shenyang Aircraft to assemble its new Model 162 SkyCatcher light sport aircraft (LSA).

Under the terms of the agreement, Shenyang will be responsible for aircraft assembly and Cessna will provide on-site personnel to oversee manufacturing, quality assurance and technical design. Cessna will design the aircraft and handle American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) compliance work, and be responsible for sales, distribution, customer service and warranty administration.

Not to self...when flying on a Cessna, check the label to see where it was made.

Cessna is now off my list. Too bad, I enjoyed flying their little toys.

Not the lead I would worry about. That will take a long time to kill you. I’d be more worried about the inferior metals, quality, and production processes. Something like a wing collapsing on final would be a real downer.

Wonder how long they plan the nuts and bolts to last before failing?

I thought it was already designed? They are taking deposits on it for delivery in 2009.

And within 18 months the Great Wall of China Aircraft Company will release its "Long March" small aircraft...a craft which will bear a striking resemblance (down to the most minute technical detail) to this Cessna.

And it will have a list price that's one-third of the Cessna's.

Ask GM,Volkswagen and others. They'll tell ya.

How well will it fly with all of the extra lead?

I’d rather a used 152, or a 150 Aerobat.

If they expect to sell many at prices the average pilot can afford, they must do this...

Our high taxes, over-regulation, Inane Enviro regs, over-unionization, and most of all, UNLIMITED CIVIL LIABILITY have pushed many things offshore...

Remind me..
Which party is it that supports those platforms again?

But you’d be on the ground faster. ;-)

Yep, already designed and I think in flight test. This is just the manufacturing contract being let.

Suitable for the aviation ping list. Aviation & politics seem to have a rich mixed history.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that's a load of BS. There are quite a few aircraft manufactures on these shores designing and building aircraft for the new sport class and they seem to be able to compete just fine...

It still will cost $119,500.

To hell with it.

By the way, do you know why general aviation airplanes are so expensive?
