The Dixie Chicks have a new controversy on their hands. In particular, lead singer Natalie Maines has started a defense fund for three Arkansas men that she (and many others) believe were wrongly convicted of killing three children in 1993.
Maines writes her plea on the Dixie Chicks Web site, which has already been answered by several celebrities including, I am told, Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Eddie Vedder, Jack Black and Henry Rollins.
"I'm writing this letter today because I believe that three men have spent the past 13 years in prison for crimes they didn't commit," Maines' message begins.
"On May 5, 1993 in West Memphis, Ark., three 8-year-old boys, Steve Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore were murdered.
"Three teenage boys, Damien Echols, Jesse Misskelley, and Jason Baldwin were convicted of the murders in 1994. Jason Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley received life sentences without parole, and Damien Echols sits on death row.
"I encourage everyone to see the HBO documentaries, 'Paradise Lost' and 'Paradise Lost 2' for the whole history of the case."
Right now, Maines main goal is to raise money for the West Memphis 3. To that end, shes directing fans to the Web site www.wm3.org.

UGH.
Sheesh — the twits never cease to amaze.
I guess it never occurred to them to have a fund for the murdered victims families for grief counseling. It’s almost like glorifying murderers when they give them this 15 minutes of fame.
I’ve seen both docs. The producers are sympathetic to their plight it seems, so it’s hard to say who is really guilty just by watching them. Nothing was clear cut, but these kids were convicted.
There is a weird step-father involved that really gave everyone the creeps. Even gives a producer a bloody knife which got the producer involved in the courtroom drama. A wild story to say the least.
Also, this case has been a liberal’s dream for a while. Steve Earle and others threw a concert a few years ago for their defense.
More bad on Ditsy Chicks....they can’t just shut up and sing....I really like their music but just the mention of their name produces rancid thoughts in the mind....therefore I expunge their music too.
That dude was freaking scary as hell. He made Damien Echols look like freaking Thomas Aquinas. Plus, what was that deal with taking his teeth out every five seconds?

Oh, I think I saw that, too! He was super creepy.
Just because some one can sing does NOT mean they have the intelligence of open a can. Natalie is a GREAT example of this.
Too bad the other two have no singing talent and have to stick
with Natalie. They could all be Mega Rich if she had kept her
fat mouth shut.
The scene where the bodies of the three murdered boys were found was a difficult scene to preserve in the first place (part of it was a river) and the West Memphis PD completely lacked the skill and expertise to preserve it with any integrity.
They also did a poor job of keeping details of the crime confidential, making it difficult to sort out testimony.
The adoptive father of one of the victims poured out many specific crime scene details to the media on the day the bodies were discovered, compromising the investigation significantly.
Also, another victim had a stepfather who was a convicted rapist (his victim was an elderly woman) and who was abusive towards his mother.
Two of that stepfather's hairs were found at the crime scene - but, of course, it would not be too much of a stretch for a boy to have two strands of his stepfather's hair on his clothes.
The three individuals in prison are dirtbag lowlifes with histories of burglary, assault and petty theft. But they are romantic figures for the left because they are "artistic" types who dressed all in black, dabbled in black magic, listened to heavy metal and who saw themselves as rebels against their larger community, which was comprised mostly of churchgoing, working class folks - not lazy, criminal occultists.
The documentaries Maines is referring to are highly partisan movies made by filmmakers who passionately believe that the three are innocent. The filmmakers have made three films now about these guys.
What, Leonard Peltier not good enough for the Ditzy Twits?
That guy was released early by the Parole board - probably with Gov. Huckabee’s intervention. He then moved to another state where a he murdered a woman just a few years later. Its one of the major problems that Huckabee is facing in this campaign.
Let them stay busy on this and stop harassing our soldiers and marines with calls for surrender. I’m glad they have something to keep themselves busy.
I’ll never understand why sluts and brains are like oil and water.
Right! No sense in actually researching the facts of the case for yourself... just sit on your fat butt in front of the TV and let some film maker shape your thoughts. What a sheep!
Don't get me started about that jackass Steve Earle. Two friends of mine back in the mid 1980s were brutally murdered with knives by Jonathan Wayne Nobles. Nobles got the death sentence and was finally executed, but while he awaited his execution Steve Earle became is "brother." I got into it with Steve Earle via emails about him taking up for some soulless murderer and Steve Earle was TOTALLY HEARTLESS about the two girls who were brutally shredded with kitchen knives and left for dead.
Screw these celebs and their favorite pet murderers!
