Long ago, grizzly bears thrived in Montana as did tales - some tall, some true - told by frontiersmen of a man-eater even more fearsome than the other two bogeymen of the forest, wolves and mountain lions.

Also changed is how people can handle encounters with grizzlies, using a chemical spray rather than guns to improve the odds that both humans and bears will escape the encounters unharmed.
But Workman believes that if a bullet was good enough for his great-grandfather more than a century ago, then it's good enough for him when confronted by a charging grizzly, especially since he's wielding a modern, high-powered rifle.
It's an opinion held by many hunters, but Workman also is a member of Montana's Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission, the citizen board that oversees the state Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
And that agency, along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, devotes considerable resources each year on bear awareness programs that emphasize chemical spray, not bullets, as the way to keep both people and bears safe in the woods.
Last week, Workman drew widespread criticism from bear biologists, wildlife officials and some hunters when he shot a charging grizzly - and later said bullets are far more effective than bear spray in fending off such an attack.
“These people who think that they're safe with bear spray, I'm here to tell them it's a false sense of security,” he said.
“The spray is better than nothing, but I'll choose a firearm every time.”
Workman...also drew fire for saying grizzlies have become so populous in Montana that they should be taken off the endangered species list and hunted to make them afraid of people.

I wouldn't count on that. Many shops have some pretty mild 405 gr 45/70 for "cowboy action shooting". The tame stuff is guaranteed safe in the old trap door style rifles. It has under 28,500 CUP rated pressure. Good hunting rounds for more modern level action rifles are rated around 40,000 CUP. The heavy duty rounds for Ruger #1 and T/C Encore rifles are rated to 50,000 CUP. I would feel confortable with my Marlin 1895GM with a 405 gr round at 40,000 CUP in bear country.
I vote 12ga shortbarrel pump with slugs.
You go to any Potlatches and you’ll see 10-20 30-30’s on floor to be given away. Indians have shot more interior grizz with 30-30’s than any other gun.
Personally, I carry a S&W 460 mag or an old 45/70. The 460 leaves barrel at 2200; will put quarter size holes thru 1/4 inch plate steel.
If the rifle is in proper shooting condition, it will handle modern cartridges, IF YOU USE LOADS THAT REPLICATE THE ORIGINAL LOADING. Luckily, most “off the shelf” loadings do this, because they do not want the lawsuits caused from ruptured/ruined antiques.
Try a small rubber band and a very small stone, much more effective. (You should see the other guy.)

Modern rifles with smokeless powder have slightly higher velocities but with lighter copper jacketed bullets still approximate the same energies as the original Black Powder loads.
Sorry, but I'm gonna have to call BS on that one. You might want to check out a real source so as to have some clue as to what you're talking about next time. Garrett's 500-gr smokeless loads are about the maximum safe and possible with modern rifles like the Marlins and send the 500-gr bullet out at around 1530 fps; that same cartridge would fit in a nineteenth-century rifle, original or replica either one, but would blow that rifle apart the instant you pulled the trigger. The black powder version of the cartridge doesn't come close to the power of the modern versions.

A bear sitting around eating someone and spraying down the meat with bear mace and using it like Tobassco.

How could pepper spray work if both the wind and the bear are coming directly at you?
In the video the hunters are downwind, I think they say as much.
Pepper spray = condiment for grizz. Take a box of Morton salt to round out the bear's meal.
You would need 9 large caliber type bullets loaded into 9 heavy ammo holding weapons and shoot them off around 9:00 a.m. only be berry berry quite when hunting these bears cause they like to sleep in!

A 330-gr slug at 1400fps is about the equal to hot .454 Casull and better than .50AE. These will penetrate from the head to the pelvis of a charging grizzly at 25 yards.
Garrett has several .45-70 loads as well.
Use these only in particularly STRONG overbuilt firearms.
Silly, that’s not for bears. Garretts are better used on foxes and mooses and owls.
