Because the Boston Globe was looking into it. From the paper, posted a short time ago:
Mitt Romney, who has taken a tough stance against illegal immigrants in his quest for the Republican presidential nomination, has continued to employ a company that uses illegal immigrants to do lawn work at his home.
Responding to inquiries from the Globe, which had observed the work taking place at his house and interviewed the workers, Romney tonight fired the company for failing to comply with the law
Romney has made illegal immigration a central campaign issue in his bid for the nomination. At last week's Republican debate in St. Petersburg, Fla., Romney was quick to attack Rudy Giuliani for safeguarding illegal immigrants in New York City.
Yet early the morning after the debate, immigrants from Central America who say they are here illegally were in plain view on the lawn in front of Romneys salmon-colored mansion in Belmont. Chatting in Spanish, they hustled to rake massive clumps of leaves, dump them in barrels, and clear debris from his tennis court.
Their boss, Ricardo Saenz of Chelsea, was the same man who for a decade brought illegal immigrants and others to work for Romney, whom he had met through their shared Mormon faith. A year ago, the Globe broke the news that illegal immigrants landscaped Romneys 2.5-acre property.
In the past two months, the Globe observed Saenz and his crew at Romney's estate once a week, except during the week of Thanksgiving
Last Thursday, the Globe interviewed two of the three workers who were at Romney's house. Both said they were illegal immigrants from Guatemala; one of the immigrants said the third worker was also here illegally
.
“Since Mitt cant get illegals off his own front lawn, I am convinced he cant do a damn thing about it as President.”
This is a “knock ‘em out” debate line if I ever saw one!
Rich people want to be rich as much as poor people. Poor people suckle the teets of big government. Rich people work for their money. Poor people want the rich to give them money. That's the difference between an entitlement mentality and an entrepreneurial mentality. That's the fundamental difference between socialism and conservatism.
Do you think poor people don't cut corners?
I'd like to be rich as much as you. I don't condone inethical behavior no matter what. That should be our focus.
There’s not a lot of lawn work in the North East right now.
It’s cold and windy.
inethical=unethical.
He just looks like a slick flip flopper that looks better than Kerry.
IMO he didn’t have much choice. If he did nothing, it would continue to fester. Now that he has done something, he’ll look like he has no backbone. I think he’d be a focus group President like ol’ BJ was.
Thanks!
And where does he stand as he outspends every candidate? So far he can be heard saying....money dont buy me love.
greyfoxx invited me over here as I was being accused on another thread of spreading “False Doctrine”, whatever that is.
If I were a mulitmillionare I would have no problem paying 20 dollars an hour for someone to take care of my yard.
I’ll bet these guys working on Mitt’s lawn were luck if they make 8 an hour.
That is my point. Pay enough so that its a job someone wants.
Leaf removal?
In my part of the mountains, the lawn guys also have leaf-blowers/baggers AND snow plows and blowers.
LOL - About the only thing I'll be doing with my mowers is siphoning gas out of them for the snowblower. Snow don't need mowin'.
The Party’s Ovvveerrrr!
How could he think he’d get away with this as a presidential candidate?
Illegal immigration has been ignored for a very long time. I wouldn't be surprised if most people in San Diego had (unknowingly or otherwise) employed illegal aliens to work on their property at some time or another. And we've all certainly received their services in hotels, restaurants, airports etc...
The bottomline is that the federal government has not done its job to secure the border and has not provided the small business owners with a verification system on which they can rely to assure that their workers are legal.
Until the border is secure and we have some sort of employment verification system it seems grossly unfair to place all the blame on small business owners let alone the innocent consumer of services, like a homeowner.
Shifting this blame ignores the larger problem and takes the blame off of the federal government that is not doing its job.
Poor naive innocent Willard is a victim.
Hey, It is what it is. The Navy bases are not running for the presidency. This ain’t gonna help him, though since he fired them, it might not hurt much either. My question is this: Did he report them to ICE?
Let me be clear that I'm NOT a Romney fan but it seems to me he could make this a positive pretty quickly by stating that he's just following the law in not asking about their immigration status. Then he could play off that by seeking to change it.
Wow. Ninety minutes ago, you posted a thread about how Mitt was an idiot and a liar for having illegals working on his lawn. Now, he’s an idiot and a liar for getting rid of those illegals. Talk about flip-flopping.
