Mitt's Hour of Power
Worldnet Daily ^ | 11/06/07 | Patrick J. Buchanan

Posted on 12/06/2007 8:00:22 PM PST by Reaganesque

If Mitt Romney wins the Republican nomination, it will be due in large measure to his splendid and moving defense of his faith and beliefs delivered today at the George Bush Presidential Library.

---snip---

Romney did not truckle. He did not suggest that his faith was irrelevant to the formation of his political philosophy. While declaring, "I will serve no one religion, no one group, no one cause and no one interest," he did not back away an inch from his Mormon faith.

"There are some for whom these commitments are not enough," said Romney. "They would prefer it if I would simply distance myself from my religion, say that it is more a tradition than my personal conviction, or disavow one or another of its precepts. That I will not do. I believe in my Mormon faith, and I endeavor to live by it. My faith is the faith of my fathers. I will be true to them and to my beliefs."

If this costs me the presidency, said Romney, so be it.

That is the kind of defiance this country can never hear enough of.

---snip---

To this writer, Romney is on unassailable grounds. Nor is he hurt by the fact that his wife and five children testify eloquently that he is a man of principles who lives by them.

Mike Huckabee's ascendancy and Romney's address defending his faith, refusing to disavow his beliefs and making this a test of tolerance while launching an offensive against secular humanism, tell us that God is back – in the presidential campaign.

A powerful statement regarding Mitt Romney's speech this morning. I saw Mr. Buchanan on Hardball and he was positively giddy about the speech. In watching the speech again on C-Span this evening and then listening to the callers comments, it does seem that the speech resonated. Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity were both enthused by the speech as well. Looking good!

Either Romney or Huckabee would win the general election.

Reagan didn’t have the aura he has now when he was seeking the chance to run for the GOP, he gained that aura as a result of his actions in office.

I think if Mitt gets the nod he will win the White House, and in time he will to be listed alongside Reagan as one of America’s greatest presidents. His speech today was truely ‘Reaganesque’

Romney will forget about Iowa now that Huckabee is in the lead.

He will concentrate on NH.

It was a very fine speech; I think he would make a great President. Wouldn’t it be great to have a communicator up there again?

The only part of Romney's speech that made me cringe was when he started comparing differing aspects of other religions.

Right away my spidey senses starting going, "Uh-oh". And then it came...praising the Islamic practice of praying multiple times a day.

Is there some rule in the Mormon religion that says a Morman CAN'T pray multiple times a day? Or was he pining for the day when Mormons could be flogged for NOT praying multiple times a day?

Very weird inclusion. I'd've left that part out.

Good piece from Patrick. I also watched the speech and listened to the callers tonight. The was a lot of positive feedback from those that called in. This can do nothing but help Romney. I think he will now carry Iowa with no problem.

Huckabee may now have some explaning to do there.

A couple of polls here today showed Romney leading by 11 points in Iowa.

Which polls would that be?

Strategic Vision shows Huckabee leading in Iowa, released today.

Has Pat Buchanan ever thought of getting that tumor removed that makes him spout this nonsense?

A theory.

Mitt is the heir apparent of the Bushes. That’s why B41 provided him this forum.

They like his East Coast liberalism (which he is downplaying for this election) and will continue on with their socialism-lite policies.

I think they see Giuliani a damaged goods, and Huckabee is clearly not inner circle material.

I, for one, am not buying it.

Huckabee may now have some explaining to do there.

Huckabee jumped the shark when he said God was multiplying his political fortunes by employing the same divine power that Jesus Christ used to multiply the loaves and fishes.

It was a crass and self-aggrandizing--not to mention profane--thing to say.

Mitt, by contrast, struck just the right note, never daring to suggest God had anointed him to be president, not even making jokes about the possibility.

There were two posted here today, showing Mitt in the lead with 27% I think. There are so damn many of them it is impossible to keep up. If I find it, I will give you a link.

Both Hannity and Buchanan gave a very spirited defense of religious tolerance in response to this speech. I wonder if it is partly because they are Catholic and I wonder what Buckley will say about all this?

Mohammed took that part of their practice from the Christian Arabs of his day. Christian monks collectively pray many times a day. What bugs me about the accomodation to Muslim religion is that it is like having mass said daily in a public school.

It should have some effect, I agree—especially if it gets good legs in the next several news cycles.
