WASHINGTON Frustrated with ineffective immigration enforcement and often under considerable political pressure, a growing number of states, counties and cities are requiring their law officers to help detect and deport illegal immigrants rather than rely on federal agents.
Yet as more law enforcement agencies sign up for immigration training, local officers are divided over whether their participation significantly reduces local crime or illegal immigration. Many of the jurisdictions forgo the practice, creating a patchwork of different policies across the nation.
"This is a national problem that is now being handled in a variety of ways at the local level simply because we're not getting good guidance out of Washington," said Sheriff Mark Luttrell, who oversees a Tennessee county that surrounds Memphis. "There is still a great deal of confusion over the best way to tackle immigration."

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. - A hidden camera investigation conducted by NewsChannel 5 revealed Springfield’s biggest employer may be the biggest offender when it comes to hiring undocumented immigrants.
Electrolux is one of the largest manufacturing plants in Middle Tennessee.
It employs thousands of workers.
But a NewsChannel 5 investigation uncovered some disturbing facts about many of those employees.
From city leaders to factory employees, several people said the same thing about Electrolux. They said illegal immigrants, not Americans, comprise a large portion of its workforce.

What are the numbers? One third of prisoners in feeral lock up are illegals.
Nah, let’s not get real on illegals.
Idiots.
Round up ALL illegals and send them ALL packing.
I’m not a fan of police officers but, if I were a cop, I wouldn’t want to get involved in the whole illegals mess for one very simple reason: The feds lock up their own agents for doing their jobs so how much quicker are they going to lock up some local cop? The illegals are also quite prone to violence when stopped and any cop could find himself in a federal jam for defending himself. Until the leadership at the top, including the president and the Justice Department, has a reliable policy, I’d stay out of it if I were a local cop.
Poor babies don’t wanna do their jobs?
Fine—get another.
As for the Feds, the local Sheriff can tell ‘em to get lost, and that is an ELECTIVE position.
The fact that this job has been ignored for a generation is NOT a reason to give it up entirely.
Sheriff Luttrell of Memphis considered following Hall’s lead in joining the ICE program, but he immediately heard from nervous Hispanic residents who worried about ethnic profiling.
WHY would they be worried if they are LEGAL??

And the Feds can come in and lock everybody up on criminal “civil rights” violations. Yes, I absolutely want everybody to do their jobs, but how can a “soldier in the field” do a job like that when he knows that the “generals” in the Oval Office and the Justice Department are perfectly willing to shoot him in the back?
I have no way of knowing what motivates local cops to not want to enforce the laws, but those are some reasons why I would hesitate.

I was a Police Dispatcher. Police officers are frustrated because they want to enforce laws but are given the run around. Then they say “to hell with it” because they are not backed up by the Dept. OR they are scared of lawsuits.

Although the Illegal Immigration and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRAIRA) of 1996 provied new authority for empowering local law enforcement agencies to enforce immigration law provisions against aliens illegally in the country, local police were never powerless to act on immigration law violations before adoption of that legislation. Local police departments have always had the ability to collaborate with the INS in enforcement operations. An example was local cooperation with the INS and the FBI in locating and interviewing foreign students from Middle Eastern countries following the September 11 terrorist attacks.
In addition, Section 274(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), as amended in 1986, authorizes ...all other officers whose duty it is to enforce criminal laws, to arrest persons for smuggling, harboring or transporting illegal aliens. Furthermore, federal courts had repeatedly affirmed since 1984 that local police may inquire into immigration violations in the course of a routine stop (see e.g., U.S. v. Salinas-Calderon).
ChicagoLady, usted tiene razon.
(Excuse my fractured Spanish,
por favor. And you rock!)
I was out running some errands yesterday and decided on a whim to stop in at a couple of employment agencies near where I was going and inquire about possible jobs. Turns out that both of these outfits are primarily engaged in getting jobs for ILLEGALS although they wouldn’t come out and say it. One of the reasons that many blue-collar workers can’t make a decent living is that these guys are driving wages down. When you live ten to a room and get food stamps from the government, you have a leg up on the people who are paying taxes to support you.
