Politico | October 14, 2007 | Jonathan Martin

"Social conservatives can stop looking for their perfect presidential candidate. There is one Republican who, given his credentials, would appear the likeliest to rally evangelicals and others on the Christian right."

"He is resolutely anti-abortion, supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and is a man of deep faith. He has been elected — and reelected — to statewide office in a Democratic-leaning state."

"And he’s right under their noses: Mike Huckabee."

New Hampshire NEA endorsed Huckabee and Hillary, because they think he'll be easy to beat.

He has some demons, high taxes, "compassionate conservative" at least toward illegals.

I am resolutely, unequivocally anti-abortion as well and support a lot of things. This is a good thing, but I don’t see how it qualifies me to be president of the US. What are Huckabees credentials in securing our border? What has he done to that end? We are at war, what are his military credentials, what has he done to build a strong national defense?

What is his experience and what are his positions on enforcing our laws? Do we just overlook illegals? Are we allowed to send illegals back where they belong, if they don’t have children? As a social conservative, can you discern a great difference in pardoning a murderer and lobbying for his release? Is this the kind of judgment we are to expect from a Huckabee administration? This man is a shameless panderer.

Don’t get me wrong, I find Huckabee useful. His very presence in the “top tier” exposes the folly of the so-called “top tier”. His recent conversions are in line with the rest of the so-called “top tier”. Do you think Huckabee will shine a light on that folly and get the GOP electorate to start using their gray matter or do you think they will continue down the same path? Do you think they will continue to trust that these guys in the “top tier” will do as they say they will? You never know, the paradigm may shift and the electorate may start supporting a candidate that has actually done what Huckabee and the rest are saying they will.

I fear the nation won’t survive another Arkansas Governor in the White House...
This one is even a weaker candidate than the first one.....

I’ve had MORE than enough of Arkansas, Clintons, Bushes and leftist liberals running as Republicans..

I’m curious! What makes you desire to have a president who belongs to a religious sect who desires rapture and the end of time?

Don’t get me wrong; I would be asking the same of someone who is Muslim and who wanted a Muslim president who wanted us to all go meet Allah and claim 72 Virginians.

I’m annoyed at this Huckabee thing, but when I saw this post I realized that you must be on cloud nine.

I forgot that we have a few Mike supporters here, for you guys this must be heady times, this is a shocking turn of events.

I like it because I think that it benefits my guy, and it is temporary etc., but man, there is no denying that Huckabee went from being nowhere to exploding.

I think that all of us that support other candidates envy the fun that you must be having right now.

“What goes up, must come down. Spinnin’ wheel got to go ‘round....”

Or, to the MSM, Hickabee can ask:

“Why do you build me up (build me up) buttercup baby, just to let me down (let me down)....?

For Hillary, of course. Doh.

I am having fun reading the fury on this site over Huckabee's surge. I may not agree with many of his positions but I think the guy can win BIG in a national election. He comes across as a warm guy and Republicans need one of those.

The sad reality for conservatives is Huckabee's view of the role of government is shared by a majority of voters.

This "nanny state" position is the fatal flaw of democracy. Universal suffrage ultimately results in the majority looking to take money away from the productive people and give it to the unproductive.

Ok,the leftist mainstream media and their DNC masters are more afraid of strickly fiscal conservatives than strictly social conservatives.Makes sense since lower taxes and less spending are nightmare scenarios to them while abortion on demand,anti-Christian bigotry and public sexual perversions can be easilly protected and promulgated by their constitutionally challenged jurists.
In other words,Rudy G may let them murder babies for profit but he would cut their earmarks for profit.Bad deal, libs want it all,not to mention RG is actually electable.
Huckleberry would bang his head against an entrenched leftist judiciary and maybe save a few unborn from the slaughter-houses,but increased taxing and spending would go
unchecked.Plus the Huckster is unelectable outside Clinton country.A definite win-for the left.
So,if one is and has a record of being both a fiscal and social conservative the leftist mainstream press and polls are going to diss you—that is the current political axiom.
In online polls on conservative websites, men like Mitt,Fred and Duncan come out on top.True (fiscal and social) conservatives know their own and they alone (since they represent mainstream America)pick the GOP nominee and then the President—unless they become defeatist losers, the kind who gave Pelosi and Reid Capital Hill last year.
Remember, just like in the war on terror, the left will always tell us we are losing until we win—they know discouraging propaganda is their best weapon.
Mitt or Fred are the only electable choices we have (Duncan is great but not pretty enough).I believe that Mitt lied to Mass but is now telling the truth to the US.Fred is a true conservative even if he was a little random in his younger days.
But both their greatest endorsements is the silence and slander they get from the liberal mainstream media.Leftist press affection cost McCain, more than anything, the nomination in 2000.
When daddy tells his teen-age daughter her clothes are pretty, she knows damn well she looks like a frump.

NOT too strange that a liberal Richmond MSM newspaper would fall for this......

ESPECIALLY SINCE REPUBLICAN ACTIVISTS WENT FOR FRED 112 TO 51 OVER HUCK ONE WEEK AGO AT THE GOP MEETING IN ARLINGTON

"He is resolutely anti-abortion, supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and is a man of deep faith. He has been elected — and reelected — to statewide office in a Democratic-leaning state."

Great! That's about 10% of what conservatism is about.

How is he on lowering taxes? What is his philosophy on the economy? Where does he think the federal government has too much power and how would he reduce it? Is he serious about pushing a national sales tax or is that just pandering?

Interesting that Huckabee, Romney, and Rudy point to being elected in a liberal state as a positive thing.

The surge by the former Arkansas governor has come with support from evangelicals, Southerners and conservatives, and largely at the expense of former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, according to the national survey by The Associated Press and Ipsos.

Nope. They came from Rooty. Fred’s downturn seems to be split between McCain and Romney.

The gain for huck is virtually identical to the loss for rooty. It is right down to the exact day. I ran the numbers through Excel and the graph from the last week of November to Friday 7 Dec is VERY obvious.

I wonder what agenda the author of this has?

Mike Huckabee is a nice guy.

But the one thing that drives me nuts, and this is certainly petty and juvenile on my part, is his how is one eye turns out and does NOT match the other eye.

It’s so petty that I’m sort of embarrassed to even mention it. But I can’t help it. IT IS DISCONCERTING.

I always envision a US President who has that ability to look squarely into the eyes of the US or the World with a sense of power and respect.

Unfortunately, Huckabee’s eyes just don’t do it for me.

What I have read on him causes me to believe he is a true conservative and than many of the charges laid against him are lies or greatly exagerated. The main stream media hates him and that is always a good sign that he is indeed a conservative of moral and ethical values.

Christian conservatives are concerned with more than social issues.
Evangelicals and others on the Christian right are concerned with more than abortion & “banning gay marriage”

They are concerned with truth and consistency in it.
God after all does not change as a God of truth
They are concerned with:
1) Saying the same thing on an issue over the years - truth does not change,

2) Real facts such as: Addressing the fact that the present congress under Democrat control would not let either a constitutional amendment banning abortion or homosexual marriage (gay is a euphemism) out of committee. Which means supporting either, as a candidate (whether one is sincere or insincere), is a form of pandering to the ignorance of the gullible.

3) That from a Christian point of view being a “preacher,” unto the saving of souls to eternal glory, could not possibly be forsaken to be an earthly politician in an earthly kingdom,

4) That being subject to the “higher powers” (Rom. 13:1; , I Peter2:13) includes the Governor of a state as a Christian in honoring the immigration laws of the federal government and his oath of office

You say, “”He is resolutely ...a Man of deep faith” In a Christian sense, I hope so, and will leave this to the one who Judges the heart.

But Hillary was a Sunday school teacher.
Obama goes to a church

Jackson & Sharpton are so-called “Christian Preachers”

Mitt is a devout Mormon

“They are not all Israel who are of Israel” Romans 9. There are weeds in the wheat field (tares Matt. 13:25ff. _)

Could you be more substantive on the issues.
