Omaha Mall Shooter Rifle Pictures Show Ordinary SKS
Pictures from KPTM Fox 42: Omaha ^ | 8 December, 2007 | Marktwain

Posted on 12/08/2007 6:58:18 AM PST by marktwain

It appears that we have positive identification of the rifle used in the Omaha Mall shooting. The pictures from Fox 42: Omaha show an ordinary SKS rifle with a fixed 10 round magazine. The same rifle that millions of people in the United States own for hunting and plinking. It is an acceptable deer rifle for most of the country.

There have been many reports of "assault rifle" used in the MSM, and reports of 30 round magazines. It appears that all of these reports are false, probably intended to stir up anti-gun sentiment before the election.

“Bottom line is, why are the police stating the weapon was an SKS despite mall security tapes showing the shooter with an AK? Surely the police know the difference?
Or are we misinterpreting the video captures?”

I think that we are mininterpreting the video captures. The front sight looks too tall, but it is a very fuzzy capture. Perhaps we have a video expert somewhere who can resolve the issue.

Hold the bolt back with one hand, hold the mag catch back with the other and use your 3rd hand to rock the empty mag forward to release it from the receiver.

You’re half way there. Its as easy herding cats

“I saw the womens husband on TV last night. He said that he had guns but they were locked away. His questioned how this man had access to guns anyway. He did not put the blame on parents but his point was people need to lock their guns so things like this do not happen.”

I do not see any way that having guns locked up would have prevented the shooting.

Got one. I can swap them out almost as fast as my AK.

Clearly an SKS

Not to me, but theres no way the rifle the shooter is shown holding is the same SKS shown on the Fox site. The muzzle device, whatever it is, on the Fox site is much larger than the one on the rifle the shooter is shown aiming. And where is the rather bulky base of what appears in the Fox photo to be a bipod or monopod. Or so it appears to me.

My mistake, I went back and relistened to the presser, he said, “SKS assault rifle.”

Your more nimble than I. L0L

There is a chinese variant that works like the AK. I think it was a paratroop model, its fairly rare to find

If the parents locked the guns in a safe and he did not have access to the key or the combination that would have prevented the shooting since he got the guns from his parents home....

Both the AK and the sks are similar in dimensions from the chamber forward relative to the handguard and the height of the front sight tower. The AK has a A frame front sight, the sks is a square pole. The sks is longer however from the rear sight to the front.

The bottom of the capture pic does indeed look like taped mags. They are not the same (the sks pics and the video pics).

Regards the mags for the sks, the 10 rounder is fixed. There is a 20 round fixed mag as well. Both load from the top. To remove it you have to disassemble. However, - I believe- there is a drop in 10 round mag frame that you can use to replace the original 10 round mag, which then has a well into which the ak mag can be placed.

The KPTM Fox 42 article referenced in this post was written on 12-5 and updated on 12-6. Police Chief Warren in his presser on the night of the shootings describes the weapon as an SKS ... the article is reporting what was known at the time.

Search the net for later articles written on 12-7 or today and the weapon is described as an AK-47 with them saying that the police are calling it an AK-47.

Take a look at the muzzle break in post 91.. I have worked on my share of AKs, and that looks like a slant break on the end.. Also the front sight looks like that of an AK and not an SKS

No, the woman, with whom he was staying, said that he was not on meds, but that he had been treated in the past for depression.

It could be a chinese SKS-M paratrooper, thought the original pic at the fox article is not. The SKS-M is the only SKS designed to use detachable magazines. It is rare.

I should have bought one when I had the chance, but 400 bucks for an SKS made me balk

Where are yo seeing this? There is no grenade launcher on the rifle in the pic at the originating website.

If you look at the end of the barrel you can see the larger end.. thats the grenade launcher. The yugo SKSs were imported with them and since they fall under the C&R (Curio and relic) they are legal to import in that manner.

Ive worked on my share of these yugos for friends.. and I am pretty sure thats a yugo.. they flooded the market with them a few years ago.. so lots of new SKS owners have that type.

Take a look at the picture I blew up from the original, I drew an arrow to the area that is considered the "grenade launcher" on these models.. Normal SKSs dont have that extended bit of tube there.

Heck.. some guys get inert grenades and use blanks to launch them a few hundred yards using these rifles.

I haven't seen the Mall Video. Just the photo from the article which I posted and that cops are now saying was the rifle used - A standard Chinese SKS with 10 round internal magazine with spike bayonet.

As to the cops knowing the difference; unfortunately many Chiefs are politicians and gun grabbers. They know but lie. I've seen Brady Bunch produced videos of cops using full auto rifles (M-16's) and saying BS that a semi auto version (AR-15) can fire the rounds per minute.

And some are just not too smart. Think of 'Chief Moose'.

No psychiatric treatment can offset the multiple failings that left this kid a bomb. They try but it is like trying to hold back the ocean. ANd no pill can make this kid, or could have made him, whole.

Thanks. It is better that he said SKS, but the SKS is not, and never was, an “assault rifle”.
