SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Radio talk show host Bernie Ward is considering pleading NO CONTEST to child pornography charges as part of a plea deal offered by federal prosecutors, one of his attorneys confirmed.
Jeannette Boudreau, Ward’s business attorney and longtime friend, acknowledged that a five-year sentence has been one of the options discussed but said she wasn’t sure anything had been finalized.
The KGO host and former priest faces a maximum sentence of 60 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The way I understand it, “no contest” (nolo contendere) is a slick way to admit guilt without being burdened with civil liability for the actions admitted. In other words, the fact of his conviction can’t be used as evidence of wrongdoing in civil suits that are sure to follow. When you think about it in this light, Ward, also known as Baghdad Bernie for his principled stand in the 1991 Gulf War, stands out as a courageous lyin’ of the left for evading civil responsibility for his crimes. But wasn’t he also one of the loudest voices in favor of sticking it to the Catholic Church, in terms of civil suits, for its sex scandals? Gotta love the stalinists and their courage.

And now, he's a "nolo contendre" for economical reasons? Ugh, an upstanding judge will throw the book at him, if he's lucky, then again---its SF and there's a few really wacky judges there. I guess Ward will be taking his chances.
