US minorities don't trust each other

The three main minorities in the United States -- blacks, Hispanics and Asians -- have little trust for each other and hold prejudiced views about Americans of different ethnic origins to their own, a poll showed Wednesday.

"This extraordinary poll reveals some unflattering realities that exist in America today," said Sandy Close, head of new America Media (NAM) which sponsored the poll together with ethnic media groups.

Forty-four percent of Hispanics and 47 percent of Asians are "afraid of African-Americans because they are responsible for most of the crime," the survey of 1,105 adults drawn from the three ethnic groups showed.

More than half of black Americans polled and 46 percent of Hispanics said Asian business owners do not treat them with respect.

And half of African-Americans said Latin American immigrants "are taking jobs, housing and political power away from the black community."

Hispanics and Asians, whose populations are made up mainly of immigrants, were positive about the American dream, saying that those who work hard in the United States reap the rewards of their toil.

In contrast, more than 60 percent of African-Americans dismissed the American dream as not working for them.

All three ethnic groups viewed white Americans in a more favorable light than they did members of another minority.

Sixty-one percent of Hispanics, 54 percent of Asians and 47 percent of African-Americans said they would rather do business with whites than members of the other two groups.

"The poll reaffirms that while race relations between ethnic groups and whites grab the headlines, there are also serious racial problems between minority groups in America," said Sergio Bendixen, an expert on Hispanic and multilingual polling.

"Blacks feel they are left out of the American Dream and are being displaced by newcomers, and each group buys into the negative stereotypes about the other two," he said.

The three minority groups did agree that the United States would be a better place if blacks, Asians and Hispanics held more authoritative positions at universities, in business, media and government.

They also said they believe racial tensions in the United States will ease over the next 10 years.

Oh no no no nono nono no NO!

Olly white people can be racist. Others may have racial prejudices or something of the kind, but racism, according to the liberals, is a combination of power and bigotry, and we all know that only white people have power, so only white people can be racist.

Yes, I know it makes no moral sense, but I can't help that. Asians, here in the US, are not capable of racism.

It’s racist of you to even ask if you can notice that.

sixty years ago, when there was open racial discrimination against Mexicans in San Antonio, the “Negroes” in the city couldn’t figure out the Mexicans and vice versa. The blacks expected all persons with dark skin to be friendly. The Mexicans thought of blacks as dark-skinned Anglos. This was the normal people; there were Mexicans—and white guys—who were into the Zoot-suit things, and the jazz culture. But generally speaking the cultures were separate, with little in common.

Wait a minute, they left out GAYS.

I don't think you'd find any minority group that has a favorable opinion of gays.

Sandy Close and her group are just now realizing this?

Been pretty obvious for decades to even the most casual observer.

Racist or not it’s true. I’m black and I can’t tell you how many time I’ve gone in a store owned by an asian and been followed around...never by a white person though.

Most people get their views on racial issues on the streets and from their own personal experiences.Parents and society, whether liberal or conservative ,may TRY to shape your outlook, but the bottom line is your anectdotal daily encounters.
Which is why I’m way more a misogynist than a racist.Just had too many BAD experiences with just about every group under the sun.

Talked about city government and what were the best seafood restaurants in the area, from what I recall.

Pray, tell... which restaurants did Hizzoner recommend? If they coincide with my picks, I may have to reevaluate my choices. ;-)

Hey, we’ve all learned long ago that an accusation of racism is not tempered by the truth of the observation.

IMHO, the miscegenation laws were passed to prevent white and blacks from integration thru families ties, to keep the two groups separate. Of course the two groups mixed anyway. I have read there was more race-mixing after the Civil War than during slavery. The fact is that Southerners are a mixed race folk. White-Black and Indian. The same is true of all three groups, with only the proportions different. The main differences are cultural, but white Southeners and black Southerners and Indian Southerners have many common cultural practices. Blacks who went North have had a hard time adapting in the North, in part because white Northerners are so different from white Southerners. White Northerners, such as the Irish, saw the blacks as just another competitive ethnic group.

Do you mean misanthropist? A misogynist hates women.

Just wondering if you really meant to exclude men.

Pass the popcorn. That is exactly what diversity brings. Afro-American, Latin-American and Asian-American! There is NO MELTING pot any more because each “group” thinks it’s group is more important than anyone elses and refuses to assimilate (melt) into being US citizens.
