N.J. Legislature Votes To Repeal Death Penalty Corzine Expected To Sign Into Law

POSTED: 4:44 pm EST December 13, 2007 NEW YORK -- New Jersey's legislature has become the first in the nation to repeal the death penalty, since the US Supreme Court first allowed its reinstatement in a landmark ruling 31 years ago.

Following a State Senate vote Monday to repeal New Jersey's law, the Assembly has now followed suit on a 43 to 36 vote.

WNBC.com's Brian Thompson reports that Governor Corzine is expected to sign the repeal into law early next week.

For opponents of the death penalty, New Jersey's action is seen as the launch of a movement to repeal similar laws in other states, many of which have considered such a step, but whose legislatures have declined to act.

Exactly. I guess they had so much time to devote to this issue while ethics and tax reform sit on the never ending sideline.

The death penalty here in NJ was never really enacted because the state supreme court made sure to strike down any use of it. I remember one nefarious example: a man had stabbed the victim viciously 56 times...and the state supreme court said that “intent” to murder had not been proven! New Jersey is the worst state in the union...and Corzine is the biggest crook in a state assembly of crooks!

Most of the folks in Newark (where those three college students were murdered, among hundreds of others per year in said city) are against the death penalty because it is "discriminatory" against blacks.

This doesn't mean a damn thing. NJ hasn't executed anyone since the 1960s. Even Howard Unruh, who shot and killed several people in Camden in the early 1950s is still doing Life over in Rahway.

Great news! I'm a big fan of Jesse Timmendequas, that sorry POS who raped and killed little Megan Kanka, for whom "Megan's Law" was named. It's nice to know that Jesse will never have to pay the ultimate price like Megan did.

If my children and grandchildren didn't live nearby, in this sorry state of New Jersey, I'd haul my ancient a$$ to greener pastures.

Well, they didn't ask me. I have seen it used much more often. I've never been able to understand how it is that once someone whom I do not know is convicted of a crime, I suddenly have some reponsibility to provide for his food, clothing and shelter.

That is correct. According to the latest in forensics, a person in the state of New Jersey must be stabbed a minimum of 867 times for "intent" to murder to be proven! If the number of stab wounds is greater than 35, but fewer than 867, the highest charge that can be brought is manslaughter. If there are 35 stab wounds or fewer, it is considered a suicide.

But not many, and certainly not here. NJ hasn't executed anyone since 1963. Yes, there have been death sentences handed down, but they've only resulted in windfalls for "court appointed lawyers." (which really means lawyers that taxpayers pay for)

Life doesn’t even mean life anymore. Save on the cost of infrastructure and cost of (and danger to) personnel by instituting my “Rock in the Aleutians Solution”. It’s laid out in my FReeper profile.
