Global warming is blamed for walrus stampede deaths
Associated Press - December 14, 2007 4:23 PM ET
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Some scientists blame the deaths of thousands of Pacific walruses on the disappearance of sea ice caused by global warming.
The walruses died in stampedes earlier this year as they crowded on shorelines along the Asian side of the Bering Strait, which separates Alaska from Russia.
An expert with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the lack of sea ice during the late summer and early fall led to a "pretty sobering year" that was "tough on walruses."
A Russian biologist estimates that as many as 4,000 walruses out of a population of some 200,000 died this year, a death rate that's two or three times the usual number.

Did they die because the polar bears ate them?
BTW - The deaths are an estimate. This raises my BS Flag. Whenever I see the word “estimate” these days I substitute it with “made up.” I may not be right every time but chances are very good I am most of the time.

“Some scientists blame the deaths of thousands of Pacific walruses on the disappearance of sea ice caused by global warming.” Other scientists blame Wal-Mart’s low seafood prices for causing the stampede. While even other scientists think polar bears are to blame for scaring the cuddly mammals causing them to stampede.

Some scientists blame the deaths of thousands of Pacific walruses on the disappearance of sea ice caused by global warming. Then these are poor excuses for scientists. First, can they demonstrate that there is in fact global warming? Second, can they link that as a cause for unusual sea ice conditions? Third, can they prove that sea ice conditions caused the deaths?
Seems to me they are playing fast and loose with conclusions and glossing over a lot of work they probably haven't done, or done properly/thoroughly. Smells of jumping on the most convenient bandwagon...

A population of 200,000 is pretty magnificent for a creature that size. Their probably way “Overpopulated” at this point in time.

Global warming is blamed for walrus stampede deaths I guess that the whole "drowning polar bears" thing wasn't working as planned, so they had to come up with something new.

The Puget Sound, here in WA State. I read an article here in the local papers recently that said the population of sea lions here in the very early 70s had gotten extremely low, maybe 1000 or so. Today, the population is about 30,000, a count they admitted might be much higher. Full recovery, the animal better appreciated, protected, not allowed to be shot by fishermen etc. Problem is, the system really can’t handle that many of them.
To: digger48
Oh my, another thing caused by global warming to put on the list of hundreds! Don’t have the link right now of the list, but Rush had it on his web site. Incredible!
To: digger48
And just how do we know that walruses haven’t been doing this for centuries? Did they tell Algore?

From the article - "A Russian biologist estimates that as many as 4,000 walruses out of a population of some 200,000 died this year, a death rate that's two or three times the usual number."
If 4000 walruses die every year in a population of 200,000, that means the life expectancy for a walrus is 50 years.
But if that 4000 is 2-3 times the "normal number" then with normal numbers of deaths, the life expectancy for a walrus is 100-150 years.
The unnamed scientist is obviously full of crap.

"Third, can they prove that sea ice conditions caused the deaths?"
Well, since we know that UN scienticians never lie, apparently a 1 degree increase in temperatures over the last century completely melts every chunk of ice in the ocean.

From another article:
"As a result, walruses came ashore earlier and stayed longer, congregating in extremely high numbers, with herds as big as 40,000 at Point Shmidt, a spot that had not been used by walruses as a "haulout" for a century, scientists said."
I guess 100 years ago when the exact same thing happened it was not caused by man, but they are sure this time it is...

This morning (9/20/2010) The Today show had a 5 minute long story on how climate change is causing Walruses to congregate on land because of the lack of sea ice and they frequently stampede killing many babies.
They presented this as if its a brand new thing, its so funny that this same basic story was paraded in 2007!
