CHULA VISTA – A middle school student was arrested Tuesday after a teacher saw him fashioning a small knife out of wood during a shop class.

The boy, who is in eighth grade at Castle Park Middle School, was taken into custody about 11:15 a.m. and then released to his parents, said Chula Vista police spokesman Bernard Gonzalez.

The boy has been suspended for four days, said Sweetwater Union High School District spokeswoman Lillian Leopold. When he returns to school after the holiday break he will also undergo counseling, Leopold said.

District policy says that a student will be expelled if they are found in possession of a knife with a blade 3½ inches or longer, Leopold said.

The knife the boy made was 2 inches long, she said.

Most shop teachers I know or knew would have handled it by saying, “Throw it away”.

Did you notice the comments at the end of the article? There are a lot of people in that area that think it’s just fine that the kid was tossed out of school! Pretty sad, I have a real fear about the direction we are heading.

I'll take your word for it -- too many newspaper and TV sites are so larded up with graphics and off-site links that they take forever to load.

But if you want to see where we're headed, just look at the UK.

I have a real fear about the direction we are heading.

The problem is.....we have been heading there too long. There is now no turning back. We have become a "Nanny Society"!

This trend began during the sixties and it will overwhelm us before long. I know people who claim to be conservatives....but they still look to the Federal Government for most answers to their problems. They have forgotten the tenth amendment and when reminded of it.....look at you like a deer in the headlights....and then still claim to be conservative!

I’m surprised CA public school system hadn’t taught him how to “Keester a shank” by the 8th grade.

Nanny society is the perfect description! We are constantly being scolded by our Nanny Governor through P.S.A.’S to “wear our seat belts”,”don’t talk on the cell phone while you drive”, Don’t smoke”, Gamble Responsibly [even though the state is the biggest proponent of gambling],”drink responsibly”,etc. etc.I already have a mother I don’t need two!

I know you were being sarcastic, but...

Would you be saying the same thing, if he had then taken the 'knife' to Art class, and crafted a wax 'representation' of his math teacher, then killed him by sticking the 'knife' into the voodoo doll of the 'teacher'?

If we had some ham, we could have ham and eggs, if we had some eggs.

It would go nice with the wooden sap that I made in 64. It looks like a miniature baseball bat with a lead plug in the end and a leather wrist strap.

These lefties have gone over the wall on this crap. This is the consequence of losing elections. It's going to get much worse.

We have truly gone insane in this country and the insanity seems to be centered around the government schools.

When I was a kid I wore a metal knife on my belt to school.

The infamous “lockblade”.

Good Lord.

I even went shooting with a teacher and other students “on school property” just out behind the shop.

Something drastically bad happened to this country when the draft-dodging hippies became (sort-of) adults! This is the result.

Honestly, when I was in school, if we knew that a 2 inch wooden knife replica could get you expelled, half the class would be brandishing them the next day!
