So the socialists at Time chose the press-squashing, opponent-jailing, freedom-restricting Vlad the Putin. Pathetic choice, I agree.
I would like to have this thread be a place where we can have a conversation about who OUGHT to be the "Person of the Year".
No real rules, since a conversation can go several places.
I would suggest, however, that we pick someone who is not an "icon", or who could credibly be the POY every single year.
For instance, Rush Limbaugh--I love the guy, and he COULD be POY every year...but he is pretty much extraordinary EVERY year. I am thinking we ought to suggest someone who has, this year especially, been a hero to advancing the cause of freedom.
But hey, that is just a suggestion. Let's have some fun.
My Vote is for Sarkosy of France. But, I would also nominate Bruce Wilis, the actor.
The General hands down.
Mark Steyn for standing up to Canadian anti-free-speech extremists.
Lt.General Petraeus, for sure with an honorable mention of Major General Peter Pace who told it like is which cost him a renomination..
Sarkozy, Merkel and Blair for their continual support
and FReepers: icwhatudo, jveritas, doug from upland for their great posts..
I forgot doug from upland: I take him for granted, shame on me!
Gen. Petraeus will be viewed in history as a great general. It is certainly different, but he will be remembered with the same reverence as Patton.
There was a college football coach whose player was called a “coward” by the MSM. He went ballistic during the press conference. I can’t remember his name but I give him an Hon. Mention for taking it directly to the MSM much as Petraeus has been taking it to al Qaeda.
If the Dems realize their wet dream and take the White House on 01-20-09, then Monsieur Sarkozy will become the immediate Leader of What’t Left of the Western World, and by default, the Man of the Year for 2009. So I give it to Petraeus for 2008 with Sarkozy waiting in the wings.
As for Putin, he really oughta be at Gitmo.
You’re too kind - my partner in crime has borne the real burden this year.
While the President's first veto was indeed a courageous act, I think these researchers were well underway with their studies by the time the veto was signed, about fifteen months ago. I seem to remember the news about skin cells coming out about July of this year. Surely, work was contemplated (and substantially completed) before the President's veto pen started twitching. Certainly, these researchers realized that even the lack of a Presidential veto would not necessarily be of enormous significance to those of us who hold innocent life dear, insofar as the impact of their findings.
“It’s been 2293 days since terrorists made an attack on U.S. soil.”
We wont talk about the millions of illegal invaders since 9/11.
General Petraeus!
He’s got my vote. Might be the competent man in the US government.
Petraeus
Inhofe
Sarkozy
And the American service-person; doing the longest, most fearful and
most boring job in the world...policing countries even when the natives won’t.
And rarely whining about the challenges and downsides of the job.
General Petraeus has my vote.
Jim Robinson is FR person for life.
Lots of fantastic runner-ups like Rush, Fred, Sarko, the late Rev. Falwell, and ....Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, a great man attempting to defend his nation in the face of growing islamic terror in the Balkans.
CONSERVATIVE WOMEN: Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Michelle Malkin, and others.
Sorry, but this @$$wipe Gore has pissed me off, and I know he has done the same to other beer-drinking conservatives, which means he cost the Dems MEGA-votes, right?
I’ll keep reading but if you need a second I will be glad to do it!!
Thank you for the consideration, but the real nomination goes to you guys who get out from behind you keyboards & fight this battle in the streets.
Excellent point about the domestic side. I had merely praised him regarding his poise during testimony. He is a better man than I; my instinct would've been to throttle the traitors.
My vote: Petraeus. Anyone who makes Code Pink livid deserves it. He will be on the ticket in 2012.
Runner up: Sarko.
