Forget "Time": Who is your FR "Person of the Year"?
FREEPers Everywhere! | 12/20/07 | Recovering_Democrat

So the socialists at Time chose the press-squashing, opponent-jailing, freedom-restricting Vlad the Putin. Pathetic choice, I agree.

I would like to have this thread be a place where we can have a conversation about who OUGHT to be the "Person of the Year".

No real rules, since a conversation can go several places.

I would suggest, however, that we pick someone who is not an "icon", or who could credibly be the POY every single year.

For instance, Rush Limbaugh--I love the guy, and he COULD be POY every year...but he is pretty much extraordinary EVERY year. I am thinking we ought to suggest someone who has, this year especially, been a hero to advancing the cause of freedom.

But hey, that is just a suggestion. Let's have some fun.

My first three suggestions:

General David Petraeus, leader of the magnificent U.S. military effort in Iraq. So much has been said about his intelligence and prowess, it need not be repeated here. I admire his professionalism and poise when he testified before Congress. I would've wanted to jump over the table and put some color on the faces of some of those Neville Chamberlain wannabes. So he's smart AND restrained.

James Inhofe, Senator from Oklahoma. He has been the leading voice in Washington to take on Al Gore's idiotic global warming scaremongering. I want to shake his hand someday.

Nicolas Sarkozy, French President. Walking off the set of 60 Minutes would get him a nomination immediately, but he also won in France with a conservative message and an embrace of America. A great quote from this European leader sounds Reaganesque: "I reject the kind of naive, wishful thinking that makes every delinquent a victim of society and every riot a social problem."

I second that.

But remember....the times picked putin and in 1939 picked hitler as man of the year. Both men with blood on their hands. So much for times.

Great idea. Great choices presented so far.

I would agree General David Petraeus tops my list with honorable mention to every American in the armed forces PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE.

If I would have said "Ron Paul," it would have been Removed by Moderator, so instead I'll say Packers QB Brett Favre

I’m going with General Petraeus.

Fred Thompson is a close second. We need that man in the Presidency. God help America if Hillary or Obama wins.

He’s the Man of the Century with all the Indian folks where I work. I rarely see them excited by anything in the American papers, but this one sure got their attention. They say back home he’s a huge hero.
