Top Huck Aide Leaves Romney's Religion on Table
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Ed Rollins is Mike Huckabee's National Campaign Chairman. Appearing on this evening's Hardball, the renowned political consultant declined to say that Romney's religion wasn't relevant to the campaign. For good measure, Rollins suggested that a senior Romney aide is . . . an atheist. CHRIS MATTHEWS: Does faith bring you guys together or separate you?

ED ROLLINS: Well, first of all, you and I are Catholics and Ron [Kaufman, senior Romney aide] are you still an atheist or have you basically converted, now that you're rich?

There must be a school in Hope, Arkansas that teaches this type of slimy attack politics because Huckabee and the Clintons run remarkably similar campaign styles.

I had wagered 6 days until Ed Rollins made himself the story rather than the campaign.

Time to collect my winnings.

Ed Rollins is either the biggest A-hole ever to work in a Republican campaign, or...

...a Rove plant!

I watched this live and it was said in jest and was kind of funny. Obviously, it would have been a better joke off camera.

Maybe so as far as the atheist crack. Even so it’s a very touchy thing in the current context. In any case, there was absolutely nothing funny in the way Rollins declined to say Romney’s religion wasn’t relevant.

Yeah, I have dropped him down to one level above Ron Paul on my list.

I think it is relevant to quite a few people. As much as we might not want to say this, I think being a Morman is a big problem for Romney. Just as there was a whisper campaign against McCain in SC in 2000, I expect there will be another one, but much worse against Romney this year. Most of America believes Mormanism is just a little bit strange and I believe this will show up in Iowa and in South Carolina. Of course, in the PC world in which we live, no one will want to discuss this publicly.

Was Ed Rollins supposed to lie about the fact that the voters will decide?

Your supposed to say that religion is out of bounds and not up for discussion, then you slime the other guy behind the scenes.

Pretty funny line from Ed. Anybody who takes what he said seriously must be a liberal, because liberals don’t joke about their religion, which is politics.

They've also mostly similar opinions on everything too. Maybe they did go to the same school.

Who needs to hear? All you have to do is to look at this horrid Red, White, and Blue Jeans abomination of a photo to realize that that entire group has serious problems (is she strangling that dog?)
