Peggy Noonan is one of those “Wall Street-Washington” insider elitists so take her opinion with a grain of salt.

Huckabee is an ADVOCATE for ILLEGAL immigrants as a governor,
then issues a hard-@$$ policy stance on ILLEGAL immigrants when vying
for the Republican Presidential slot.

Thus I take what Huckabee says with a sub-lethal dose of salt.

Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggert, Ted Haggard, and Mike Huckabee.

Hmmmmm. God must have something going with that double letter in the last name.

They all pander to their strengths. Huckabee is being what he is, not a preacher, a politician!

Huckabee is one of the purest demagogues that I can recall.

I am mostly with Peggy on this one...

I wound up thinking this: That guy is using the cross so I'll like him. That doesn't tell me what he thinks of Jesus, but it does tell me what he thinks of me.

However, concerning what he thinks about Christ, if he felt so strongly that he needed to place the cross in this message, why not make it unambiguous and stand by it instead of using the glow enhanced edges of a bookcase to give the impression of the cross to those who saw it but which he could later deny.

Those who are not Christians would not care about this, but for me the fact that he used the cross and then denied the cross was the most telling thing to come from this ad.

"The religious right is powerful, and deserves to be taken seriously, only insofar as it transcends theological differences and focuses on issues. If it does not, it degenerates into just another form of identity politics."

I'm not a TV watcher, and haven't seen the ad; however, Peggy Noonan makes me think Huckabee is using a subliminal televangelism trick. Most shots with bookcase backgrounds have them full of books.

Welcome to the camp
I guess you know why I’m here
I am the Huckster
And I’m being pushed this year
If you want to follow me
You have to play pinball
And put in the earplugs
Put on the eye shades
You know where to put the cork...

The Huckabee ad was good and infact effective. That’s why we’ve seen alot of the candidates coming out with their Christmas/Holiday season commercials. Alot of these politicians just can’t fake warmth (especially PIAPS). The only good ad IMHO other than Huckabee is the Obama ad.

Good article. Expresses things I can’t. The more I see him, the less I like him. It started with his “innocent” question about Mormon theology (Jesus & Satan brothers?). It’s been downhill since. I somewhat liked him before, but that was a turning point for me. He’s playing a nasty game. Reminds me of the Clintons.
